Intel 4790k vs 8700K

I know a lot of people are stating its not worth it and wait for the next gen cpu from intel (example Sky and Kaby).

I was wondering if upgrading form the intel 4790k to the intel 8700 would be worth it? Especially when I can upgrade for about $600 to $800 for the new MB, RAM and i7. I normally game on a 3440x1440 monitor and my gpu is a gtx 1080.

Wroth is subjective.

Depends whether the performance increase is worth that much money to you.

If you're not able to run the games as well as you would like, or not getting great results from the software you use, then upgrade. That motherboard has a lot of negative reviews, though.

Also, Intel will be releasing an 8-core any day now, so maybe you should wait and see what that CPU is all about.

The other MB I was looking at was this MSI board too https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813144106

I like the idea of waiting for the 8 core but something tells me its going to be everyone say wait for the next gen before upgrading.

i'm not familiar with any of those :P

the point is, games that aren't cpu intensive won't really make use of an 8700. good example is Overwatch. i have a 12 core - 24 thread system, and overwatch uses 6 threads. so in your case for that game upgrading won't make a difference because you have 8 threads, and more powerful one's than mine.

i hope you understand where i'm coming from. games have been coded for a while to take advantage of 8 threads maximum, because that's what we were at for a really long time. it's only with recent games that we're seeing support for more threads.

so do some research on benchmarks of the games that you play and see if it makes a big enough difference to upgrade. if not, you might as well wait because if a game comes out that takes advantage of a cpu with more than 8 threads, you might as well upgrade then because better cpu's are available then.

I've been seeing 20+ FPS gains from the 4790k to the 9700k at 1440 and I do have a 100 hertz panel

You should be pretty close to GPU-limited with the 4790K in most games. Is it overclocked?

Current Build:

CPU: Ryzen 7 5800X3D

GPU: RTX 3080 Ti FE

RAM: 32GB G.Skill Trident Z CL16 3200 MHz

Mobo: Asus Tuf X570 Plus Wifi

CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X53

PSU: EVGA G6 Supernova 850

Case: NZXT S340 Elite

Current Laptop:

Model: Asus ROG Zephyrus G14

CPU: Ryzen 9 5900HS

GPU: RTX 3060

RAM: 16GB @3200 MHz

Old PC:

CPU: Intel i7 8700K @4.9 GHz/1.315v

RAM: 32GB G.Skill Trident Z CL16 3200 MHz

Mobo: Asus Prime Z370-A

ah ok. a 100hz panel mixes it up a bit. i only have 60..

look if you think that amount of money is worth it to take advantage of your display then go for it.. i'm just saying do some good research first. i'm quite dissapointed with multi thread support. i've had Minecraft for example max out one of the threads and start lagging. no matter what i tried. gpu usage was at about 25% so.. yeah. 20fps in minecraft with a 780ti because of poor multi threaded support.

So is 10+ FPS increases worth $800 and a complete re-install of Windows to you is the question you need to find the answer to.

Next future CPU is always better, but is not now. If you have the money and really want to. I'd say go for it. B|

Intel's 6 core 12 thread options is little more than a stop-gap measure until they can bring out the more powerful 8 core options, be it because they are unable or if they hold them back to get some more money out of their customers is up to you to decide.

I'm quite happy with my 4770k and i see no reason to change it before they can offer some affordable 8 core CPUs, no matter how long it takes them. Besides, AMD has 8 cores 16 threads on offer at a similar price point.

Motherboard: Asus X570-E
CPU: 3900x 4.3GHZ

Memory: G.skill Trident GTZR 3200mhz cl14

GPU: AMD RX 570

SSD2: Samsung MX500 500GB

PSU: Corsair AX860i Platinum

If I were you, I would sell this 4790k for $250 at least, buy a i5 8600k, 4Gx2 used ram and a used motherboard. BHphoto has some good deal like this one https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/801790350-USE/msi_z370_gaming_m5_lga.html

So at the end, you only have to add $250 for a new platform

But why? It performs the same as the 7700k, which is only a tiny bit better than the 4790k.

I wouldn't bother upgrading. You're not being bottlenecks at your resolution and it's still a really powerful CPU at good clocks

That's an F in the profile pic

for gaming? on a 3440x1440 with a GTX 1080? ABSOLUTE waste of money...0 FPS gains...and i mean ZERO...because you are ENTIRELY and PURELY GPU bound...in all games.

Would it be worth then to upgrade the RAM from 1600 MHz to a 2400mhz ram?

Wait until the Intel 9700k? I guess I can wait. Would you say upgrading the ram from 1600mhz to a 2400mhz would be a good upgrade to the 4790k when it comes to overclocking it?

Waiting is up to you, are you happy with the performance now? if yes i would wait.

if you going to upgrade to w/e the next gen will be i wouldn't upgrade the ram

Okay. I was wanting a newer MB also to use both of my m.2 ssds. I currently own a hyperx 512gb and it's 95% filled. I ordered a Samsung 1tb 970 Evo m.2 to replace it.

why would you do that? why not just get a 1TB Sata SSD...they are just as fast, they cost less, and wont require an m.2 slot.

4.7 GHz is still a very good overclock. I honestly wouldn't worry. The 4790K at that speed is still a damn fast CPU, right up there with the best of them. Maybe wait one more generation? I don't really think you're going to get much out of upgrading that processor.

Hell, I used an i7-980X at STOCK (3.33 GHz) from 2010 to 2016, then I overclocked it to 4.0 GHz when I got a GTX 1070 (it wasn't anywhere close to bottlenecking my GTX 770 at stock clocks). I finally upgraded it in May of 2017, and now it's in my sister's PC. It took me seven years to justify upgrading in that case, and I think you're in a similar boat with your 4790K. It's also top of the line, and overclocked high.

It's still got time left IMO.

The Samsung gets up to 3.4 gbps vs a sata ssd's 560mbps.

I use.2 because my case only has 2 drive slots and one is filled with a 3.5 and the other is the NZXT controller.
