WOW Classic will be based on Patch 1.12 but will contain some modern improvements

In a recent developer blog over at Blizzard the WOW Classic team has finally confirmed some details of how it will work with the public. It seems as though they've settled on Drums Of War as the base for classic WOW as V1.12 represents the most complete classic experience.

Blizzard’s upcoming vanilla server option for World of Warcraft, WoW Classic, will use patch 1.12 as the foundation for the game.

 

That’s what the developers confirmed in a recent developer post on the official World of Warcraft blog. World of Warcraft Classic was officially announced last year, but details about the vanilla server option have been scarce.

 

“The first—and among the most important—decision we had to make was which version of the game to focus on”, the team wrote. “As many of you have noted, the classic period was two years long and full of changes. Core features like Battlegrounds were introduced in patches after WoW’s original launch, and class design similarly changed over time. After careful consideration, we decided on Patch 1.12: Drums of War as our foundation, because it represents the most complete version of the classic experience."

The team experienced expected bugs including crashes, freezes and no modern GPU support, things you'd expect when porting an old version to modern platforms.

Not only did the team decide on which version of Classic WoW to use, it appears that they also managed to locally rebuilt version 1.12 for testing. “Our initial runs exposed a few (expected) issues: the game sometimes crashed, didn’t recognize our modern video cards, and was incompatible with our current login system”, the team continued. “That first pass also couldn’t support any of our modern security and anti-cheating capabilities. Clearly we had a lot of work to do to make WoW Classic live up to the Blizzard standard of quality, and deliver the experience players want.”

The team also seems reluctant to abandon modern back end changes, instead opting to backport them to the classic version to end up with the classic game running on the modern backend.

Interestingly, while the team aims to deliver an authentic classic experience with WoW Classic, it appears that modern changes and improvements to the game’s back-end will also be implemented.

 

“So we asked ourselves, would it still be possible to deliver an authentic classic experience if we took our modern code, with all its back-end improvements and changes, and used it to process the Patch 1.12 game data?”, the blog reads. “While that might seem counterintuitive, this would inherently include classic systems like skill ranks, old quests and terrain, talents, and so on, while later features like Transmog and Achievements would effectively not exist because they were entirely absent from the data. After weeks of R&D, experimentation, and prototyping, we were confident we could deliver the classic WoW content and gameplay without sacrificing the literally millions of hours put in to back-end development over the past 13 years.”

Gotta be honest, I have no interest in WOW so I'm not the person to be giving opinions on it but I know loads of you guys here were fans of Nostralius (sorry if I misspelled that) so I figured I'd share this here.

I'm so excited to play this version of WoW again. My favorite time in wow was When Burning Crusade came out. Wow before BC and after BC, BUT before Wrath was amazing.

But in seriousness, you're absolutely right. Even my father-in-law tried to get back into it, and he said the community has become toxic AF. He's not a fan of how people treat others, and has said the fun part of the game has long since died out.

Classic WoW with modern quality of life implementation would be ideal. Some of the old systems were awful, like talents, grouping, and transportation to name a few. With maybe the exception of transportation(no, I don't wanna do boring quest chains and rep grinds just to fly, I'll just pay for it, thanks), much of the game has vastly improved over the years. My advice is to go play on a well sorted private server and try to stick with it, as most of them are all 1.12 already..

That being said, If it is included as a free alternative with an active sub(port old toons over for example at max level, don't have time to grind it out), then sure why not. As long as the character was created before the end of vanilla WoW, then you should be able to port it across at max level.

But yeah the community these days is trash. I've been playing on and off the last ten years and it's not the same game. I believe the introduction of automatic dungeon queue+transport system, player item-level and achievements, cross-realms and even the cess pool of Looking for raid is mostly to blame. 

Back in the days you had a server reputation to uphold, these days it's pretty anonymous. You could spam dungeons all day and not having to actually talk to anyone apart from insulting the more inexperienced player that makes a misstake.  You don't have the most bad ass raid achievement, a itemlevel 1000 levels higher than possible and try to run a level 10 dungeon? "Fuck off you pos".. 9_9 

This Classic wow could potentially create a more friendly community compared to the "instant gratification, rush everything and be a dick to everyone with a smaller e-peen than yours" toxic shit of community Wow has created.

Not at all interested in WoW myself, but it's very interesting to see a game developer resurect an old version of an online game like this. Leaves me wondering how many more online based games we will see with a "retro" patch or game mode for the older fans.

How were talents awful?

In what way was grouping terrible?

Why was transportation awful?

 

Talents were good because it forced you to specialize. You couldn't just decide to play tank and then change your mind 5 minutes later. It made each character feel more special.

 

Grouping was not terrible either. Dungeons in Wow these days feels like a quick match in some FPS game. You decide to play one, join in 3 minutes (at least as healer), don't say anything to your team and just rush through everything in 5 minutes.

You used to have to plan these things, and talk to people. Running a dungeon was an event which required days of planning.

 

Transportation used to be a pain, but it made mages feel special, and it made the world seem large and alive. Why have a massive world when everyone just teleports past everything?

 

 

The quality of life improvements you mentioned is what killed WoW for me, because it felt like it became a sterile game which might as well not be an MMO.

Were the things mentioned above annoying? Yes absolutely, but it was that annoyance that gave you a sense of "pride and accomplishment" when you actually did something. Completing a dungeon you planned and prepped for, for 4 days, which took you an hour just to get to the entrance, and each one of your friends were an integral part of the team composition necessary to complete the dungeon, felt amazing. It felt like a huge task which you completed.

 

Today you click on a button, gets automatically matched with some mindless drone which can be replaced whenever, and you're automatically teleported exactly where you need to be.

Why was transportation awful?

 

Talents were good because it forced you to specialize. You couldn't just decide to play tank and then change your mind 5 minutes later. It made each character feel more special.

 

Grouping was not terrible either. Dungeons in Wow these days feels like a quick match in some FPS game. You decide to play one, join in 3 minutes (at least as healer), don't say anything to your team and just rush through everything in 5 minutes.

You used to have to plan these things, and talk to people. Running a dungeon was an event which required days of planning.

 

Transportation used to be a pain, but it made mages feel special, and it made the world seem large and alive. Why have a massive world when everyone just teleports past everything?

 

 

The quality of life improvements you mentioned is what killed WoW for me, because it felt like it became a sterile game which might as well not be an MMO.

Were the things mentioned above annoying? Yes absolutely, but it was that annoyance that gave you a sense of "pride and accomplishment" when you actually did something. Completing a dungeon you planned and prepped for, for 4 days, which took you an hour just to get to the entrance, and each one of your friends were an integral part of the team composition necessary to complete the dungeon, felt amazing. It felt like a huge task which you completed.

 

Today you click on a button, gets automatically matched with some mindless drone which can be replaced whenever, and you're automatically teleported exactly where you need to be.

For the lowest form of all the content, yes, it is fast and easy. The stuff that actually takes brains and planning, no, you still have to get there yourself. Pigeon holing someone into a role that can't be filled by anyone else is short sighted and planned poorly. I still use my mage the same way I used too, still has ports, people still ask for them.

Why is it short sighted and planned poorly (see my points below)? And who asks for portals? You can just take the Dalaran portal from Stormwind or Orgrimmar, and then you have portals to everything from there. Besides, you don't need portals or summons for things like dungeons anymore. You just get teleported there automatically.

I have no problem with that. In fact I don't think all speccs should be viable because what that means is that your choices essentially doesn't matter. If everything is viable, then you can not make mistakes, which is bad if you ask me.

I thought that was neat. Why have different classes if everyone will just be good at everything?

Warriors were unique because they were the tank (or at the very least, the best tank). Nowadays it doesn't matter if you get a warrior, druid, death knight, paladin, demon hunter or monk because everything is just fine. When everything is viable you lose a large part of the charm of having different classes. Everyone becomes disposable.

 

I get that it's convenient to be able to fulfill different roles on the same character, but it kills some of the charm for me.
