Source 2: https://twitter.com/JayzTwoCents/status/1007090818182598656

  • This week JayzTwoCents uploaded a video explaining that someone had accused him and many other (ourselves included) Tech Youtubers of asking companies for money to include them in their coverage of Computex.

  • What is a sponsorship vs what IS NOT a sponsorship

  • Is this getting an appropriate response or is it overblown?

Rumour: 8 core version of 8700k is coming this Fall!

Source 1: Rakanoth https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/937090-8-core-version-of-8700k-is-coming-this-fall/

Source 2: https://www.guru3d.com/news_story/intel_8_core_coffee_lake_to_be_released_in_this_fall.html

  • Intel will reportedly release their 8-core mainstream part by September 2018.

  • The processor will be based on Coffee Lake, meaning a new SKU with two more cores.

  • The Basin Falls platform will also receive a refresh.

    • Intel's LGA-2066 platform for Skylake-X and Xeon W would see another SKU with four more cores, moving from 18 cores towards processor with up to 22 cores.

    • Cascade Lake would be been postponed towards 2019.

  • Does Intel have their own roadmap anymore? Or are they only reacting to AMD?

AT&T closes Time Warner deal

Source 1: shermantanker https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/936967-att-acquires-time-warner-for-85-billion-dollars-who-also-owns-cnn/?tab=comments#comment-11436522

Source 2: https://www.theverge.com/2018/6/12/17452870/att-time-warner-merger-decision-judge

  • A federal judge ruled on Tuesday that AT&T's $85.4 billion bid for Time Warner was legal, imposing no conditions on the merger- all this despite a lawsuit from the Justice Department arguing that the deal would be anti-competitive.

    • he Justice Department could still appeal

  • The new company may be called “Warner Media”

  • It will combine AT&T’s paid-TV subscribers with Time Warner’s content, which includes HBO, CNN, and Warner Bros.

  • The battle has been seen as a bellwether for other vertical mergers, where a distributor and content producer are looking to combine forces.

    • Comcast reportedly planned to make a formal offer to buy 21st Century Fox the day after the ruling

      • The Walt Disney Company is also in the bidding for 21st Century Fox

  • The Justice Department argued that the major new entrant would be powerful and ubiquitous enough to dictate unfair terms in the marketplace, and it used expert testimony to highlight potential economic perils.

    • AT&T said the merger is necessary for the company to compete against the major tech industry players and would even result in better terms for consumers.

  • The judge ejected the Justice Department’s theories of consumer harm, ruling that the agency failed to meet the legal burden showing competition would be substantially lessened by the merger.

  • The deadline for the deal is set for later this month

Apple Tries to Stop Developers From Sharing Data on Users’ Friends

Source 1: Enover5 https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/937614-apple-quietly-stops-developers-from-gathering-new-contacts-data-for-economic-purposes/

Source 2: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-06-12/apple-cracks-down-on-apps-sharing-information-on-users-friends

  • Apple Inc. changed its App Store rules last week, quietly closing a loophole that let app makers store and share data without many people’s consent.

  • Many Developers ask users for access to their phone contacts, only to use it for marketing, or sometimes share or sell the information -- all without permission from the people listed in those digital address books.

  • The new App Store Review Guidelines bar developers from making databases of address book information they gather from iPhone users.

    • Sharing and selling that database with third parties is also now forbidden.

    • An app can’t get a user’s contact list, say it’s being used for one thing, and then use it for something else -- unless the developer gets consent again.

    • Anyone caught breaking the rules may be banned.

  • When users install apps and then consent, developers get dozens of potential data points on people’s friends

    • contact lists contain phone numbers, email addresses and profile photos

  • Expect a price in the $299-$399 range

  • It will rival the GTX 1080 Ti at higher resolution games because of its faster GDDR6 RAM.

  • Navi wouldn't be here until at least halfway through 2018

  • AMD will release a Navi 20 on 7nm as a high-end GPU in the 2020-2021 timeframe

New iOS security feature Already Bypassed

Source 1: captain_to_fire https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/937870-apple-just-confirmed-new-security-feature-to-stop-hardware-based-attacks-grayshift-says-they-found-a-way-around-it/

Source 2:

  • iOS 12 introduces a new USB Restricted Mode that makes it harder for law enforcement agencies to thwart iPhone security.

    • USB Restricted Mode requires that an iPhone be unlocked with a passcode when connected to a computer via USB if the device has not already been unlocked in the last hour.

    • …meaning phone hacking and forensic tools shouldn’t be able to unlock phones.

  • In an email obtained by Vice, a forensic expert claims that Grayshift has already defeated Apple’s new USB Restricted Mode in a beta build.

  • USB Restricted Mode is currently in beta testing and will launch to the public soon, according to Apple.

Scientists make first 'on demand' entanglement link

Source 1: GRex2595 https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/937427-scientists-make-first-on-demand-entanglement-link/

Source 2: https://m.phys.org/news/2018-06-scientists-demand-entanglement-link.html

  • Researchers in the Netherlands have succeeded in generating quantum entanglement between two quantum chips faster than the entanglement is lost.

    • They’re the first to deliver such a quantum link on demand.

    • This opens the door to connect multiple quantum nodes and create the very first quantum network in the world.

  • By exploiting the power of quantum entanglement, it is theoretically possible to build a quantum internet invulnerable to eavesdropping.

    • However, this requires the ability to to create entanglement reliably on demand, and maintain it long enough to pass the entangled information to the next node.

    • So far, this has been beyond the capabilities of quantum experiments.

  • The scientists generated entanglement over a distance of two metres, on demand, and theoretically for long enough to enable entanglement to a third node.

    • "The challenge is now to be the first to create a network of multiple entangled nodes—the first version of a quantum internet,"

  • Their new method allows for the generation of entanglement 40 times a second between electrons at a distance of two metres.

    • "This is a thousand times faster than with the old method."

Source 1: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2018/06/microsoft-tech-may-help-walmart-get-rid-of-cashiers-and-checkout-lines/

Source 2:

  • Microsoft is reportedly working on technology that removes the need for cashiers and checkout lines in stores, similar to Amazon's technology already implemented in its Amazon Go brick-and-mortar store.

    • The exact technology isn't explained, but it may be linked to the company's new Kinect for Azure project.

    • this project builds on Kinect's current abilities and can be used to execute spatial mapping and motion tracking

  • While it's unclear how far along Microsoft is in developing this technology, the company has reportedly shown sample tech to potential partners and has even talked to Walmart about implementing it.

  • Amazon is expected to open new GO locations in Chicago and San Francisco soon

Source 2:

  • Doubts about the new Super Smash Bros game resembling a glorified Wii U port were put to rest with an announcement this week of every existing Smash Bros character returning—and tons of tweaks big and small coming to the whopping 65-character roster.

    • Fighters must now choose their battleground stage before picking a character, due to professional players favoring certain stages for certain characters.

    • A picture-in-picture "preview" window when any combatant is launched off the screen.

    • a new score counter that pops up during one-on-one fights when anybody is KO'ed.

    • Each fighter has gotten some kind of graphical tweak

    • Two new playable characters: Ridley, the alien-pterodactyl boss from the Metroid series, and Inklings, the "squid kids" from Splatoon.

  • Smash Ultimate will launch on Nintendo Switch on December 7, 2018.

    • Ex. new features such as the new Steam Chat will not be available.

GMail reminds you to reply

Source 1: https://techcrunch.com/2018/06/15/gmail-proves-that-some-people-hate-smart-suggestions/

Source 2:

  • As part of it’s new design, Gmail has started resurfacing old unanswered emails with a suggestion that you should reply.

  • By bumping the email thread to the top of your inbox, Gmail also breaks the chronological order of your inbox
