What advice would you give to someone younger than you?

Paul Rudd

@greaves1111 Your advice to someone younger than you is to not be a dick?

Yep, that's what I said

I'm almost 40, and have been gainfully employed for over 20 years in an industry I like and don't intend to leave. I work with a lot of inflated egos, and most of those people shoot themselves in the foot because people generally don't like them.

I might not be the smartest guy in this room, but people like me, and when they get new jobs, I get new job offers. When promotion opportunities arise, I get considered alot of times.

Also, who wants to hang around with a big headed know it all.

@Windows OS Wow, what an extraordinary answer. Do you by chance know of a great way to find these views from other people? It can't be as easy as Googling "the world through the eyes of another person."

I browse Reddit in my free time, and I have been mostly on tech related subreddits, but I have also been to changemyview and AskReddit. I have seen how other people think with these tools. I have also talked with my friends and family on politics, and while the discussion heats up, it gives insight on the way that they perceive the world.

You no doubt do. If you have ever taken school(which you have), you have studied maths and read books which you will never apply to the real world

First of all, great answers. I really like almost all of them. However...

  1. Stay in school, you'll highly regret it otherwise later. (speaking from experience)

  2. Start saving up as early as possible.

  3. Don't do drugs.

  4. Don't live like you just don't care, life catch up to you very quickly, hence the savings.

  5. Try to introduce an hour or two of exercising in your week. Could be running on a treadmill or whatever while watching LTT videos. Because by the time you reach your 30s, if you haven't done anything to stay in shape, it's all downhill from there.

  6. Don't drink and drive, don't be a statistic. (+1 car death for that year)

  7. Be respectful and mindful of others around you if you want them to respect you. (and if they still don't, fuck 'em, just means they weren't worth it)

  8. You don't need to be someone you're not just to fit in with others, be yourself.

  9. If a cop ask you do something, JUST DO IT. Don't try to act like a tough prideful guy and disobey, that's just asking to get tased/shot. Better to be laying down on the ground than 6 foot under.

  10. If you can't afford something, but you really want it, suck it up and don't use credit. If you can't afford it now, what makes you think you can afford it later? Not to mention with the interest rates, you'll be paying much more.

  11. Establish a budget with your spending and income, yes it's boring, but without one you'll be tempted to touch that credit card a few times too many and then you're $50k in debt before you know it.

  12. Learn to do basic renovation work in a house, like painting, patching a hole in a drywall, placing ceramic tiles+grout, installing a laminate flooring, etc... You will be saving a TON of money if you ever get a home by doing these basic things yourself.

  13. Don't lend more than $20 to any single person, ever. Not to your friends, not to your family.
$20 is a sum you can afford to lose, any more than that is a different matter entirely.
Insolvable people are the ones who are likely to ask you to lend them money, if they are unable to pay their existing debt, how do you think they will be paying you back?
If they "need money for food", just send them off to the nearest food bank, you're not a charity.
If they couldn't handle their budget properly, why would you fuck over yours for them? Regardless of who they are or their reasons, just don't. You'll just get burned later.

There's a bunch more, but that should be the basics.

I'd say don't be afraid of being alone, of being miserable. There's nothing you can do to magically get out of your depression and isolation so beating yourself up because of it will only make things worst, it won't get better but you will learn to cope better and to be at peace with yourself, without being feathered down by social pressures or expectations.

there isn't a life that you can "have it all". that you can be fulfilling and YET don't pay the price for it, don't sacrifice for it. there isn't.

have friends that are from the same peer is really important.

go out exercise and make it a habit.

just be yourself, you don't wanna spend your whole life trying to be someone else.

you don't have to be perfect.

If it is not broken, let's fix till it is.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
        In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
        In Flanders fields.

1.  Stay out of debt as much as possible if this means buying a used honda civic so be it you can run those things into the ground.  Debt free is key to independence in almost all aspects

2.  Don't rush into marriage (this one's more geared towards men).  Aside from the legal consequences being stacked against you it is financially a heavy burden and potentially quite devastating and that doesn't even take into account once kids get involved. If you as a man are 30-35 you're that much more wiser and have had time to save up much more money that you would have likely otherwise.

3.  Always learn to do things on your own.  You don't have to do this all at once in fact that's the joy of it learning little by little.  Learn how to change a tire and oil, learn to cook for yourself, pick up a hobby of learning languages, programming, and classical philosophies of Seneca and the like.  Knowledge is power.

That true happiness does not come from buying/owning <insert trinket here>.

When you're young you want all kinds of material things, that fancy BMW, that iphone XXV, etc...

But once you have it, within a short time the "new" fades away and you're out drooling over the next thing you want. It's an endless rat-race, always something newer and prettier out there. The endless lust for more makes you more miserable then actually obtaining it does good.

And perhaps most of the things you want are more to show off to peers rather then things you actually want for yourself. But maybe you're better off with friends who like you for what and who you are rather then which car you drive ?

Let go of this rat-race, educate yourself financially, invest and grow the money you save by not participating in this nonsense and much sooner then you think you can be financially independent. Not having to work because you need the money, but choosing the work you want to do and are passionate about. Sometimes even taking a sabbatical, because you can afford it.

I've found that comes closer to true happiness then owning the next <insert trinket here>.

Oh, don't forget. Wear a condom when having sex especially if you have many partners. It is fun and games until you get STDs

@wasab Because STD's cultivate in the area around the lady garden, wearing a hood ornament only makes the car less fun to drive.
