Apples's Software upgrade of 11.4 draining batteries

https://www.gsmarena.com/ios_114_users_reporting_rapid_battery_drain_post_update-news-31620.php

Apple released the iOS 11.4 update late last month. The update included many new features and changes, but it appears to have also brought along a serious problem. A large number of those who updated their devices to iOS 11.4 are complaining about rapid battery drain.

There are several threads discussing the problem on Apple's official forum, and on one of these threads, close to a thousand users have confirmed the issue with their unit.

I would think it's probably and intentional move by Apple. Having a bunch of new features is great for people with new phones, but for people with old phones, it sucks.

Main PC:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X • Noctua NH-D15 • MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk • 2x8GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 • MSI VENTUS 3X GeForce RTX 3070 OC • Samsung 970 Evo 1TB • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB • Cosair iCUE 465X RGB • Corsair RMx 750W (White)

Peripherals/Other:

ASUS VG27AQ • G PRO K/DA • G502 Hero K/DA • G733 K/DA • G840 K/DA • Oculus Quest 2 • Nintendo Switch (Rev. 2)

Laptop (Dell XPS 13):

Intel Core i7-1195G7 • Intel Iris Xe Graphics • 16GB LPDDR4x 4267MHz • 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD • 13.4" OLED 3.5K InfinityEdge Display (3456x2160, 400nit, touch).

Bugs are bugs are bugs.

Users generally have about 2 weeks after the release of a new version of iOS to roll back to the version preceding the last. If that isn't long enough to notice you are having problems with your phone and downgrading as a result.....then idk how to help.

I'd like to see some hard data rather than two posts on the Apple support forum though. As far as I'm concerned, its far more likely that two people with really older iPhones (iPhone 6 and 6s Plus) had their batteries fail in some way.

Though if it is a software issue it will be fixed in a few days and there is nothing to worry about.....you know because Apple actually has a software update model.....

iOS 7 and iPhone 4s.

There's two options, a, not a single person tested it with a single app more than stock, or b, they couldn't care less and intentionally pushed a phone breaking update you're unable to reverse

First off you never have to update to a new release.

Secondly, immediately after every iOS release you can downgrade for usually a week at the least.

You can always wait for reviews on how an OS update performs before making a decision.

With Apple devices, you have consent over what happens to your software. Its never forced, even though it might bug you to update every once and a while, but you can't say Apple screws over users when it gives them almost every opportunity to say no. The only thing they could do better is constantly sign all versions of iOS, but then people would never update and that is bad for business.

I do wish apple would just sign every firmware in case people want to go back to an older version for some reason.

It theoretically won't affect the user install base much if it's as complicated as it is now to downgrade.... 90% of people aren't going to go through the trouble unless they have to.

and they could still push "get on the latest and greatest update plz" like they do now...

It would affect them quite a bit. Apple relies on 1 current release, 1 outgoing release, and legacy. They want 3 portions of their OS install base pie chart to exist, letting that "other" portion grow rather than shrink is bad for business.

they could also choose to make it a "at your own risk" thing and not track it at all...

There are more valid reasons to not do that than to do it. Apple is a business and their practices have gotten them where they are now. They aren't going to change just for a few people supposedly having battery problems. It's much easier and makes way more sense to just issue a patch.

Forced? Nah, but they sure will bug you til you give in. At least once a day intrusive pop up notifications are ridiculous. There should be a no, never, and quit telling me about it option.

Seems like it's true. I charged my iPhone se yesterday and it's already near 20% on battery. I don't use my iPhone much (I have a pixel 2) except for listening to music and it's on standby most of the time and would last for days.

Yes it's probably a bug but if it's happening to a lot of us then what happened to testing before release?

Really? I do some qa for my companies iPad app, so I have like 10 spanning different releases. Just about every one that's not current will give me a pop up at least once a day, sometimes twice.

Maybe they've stopped that after a version or two ago? Honestly I haven't paid attention to the versions that do and don't

Haven't experienced this, but this is probably due to people turning off the battery health saver, where Apple undervolted the CPU to save power due to low battery health. Not surprising in the least.

Off topic, but I'm pretty sure iOS 6 is still being signed for whatever reason. I downloaded the firmware recently and it flashed normally under iTunes for my old iPad 2. It's hard to use the internet on it now since iOS 6 isn't really up to snuff with today's web standards, but the device is now fast and snappy for everything I wish to use it for (movies, certain games, YouTube, etc.)

It's because the phone is probably rebuilding caches and indices and shit after an update and performance will be back to normal within 24 hours.

We can drop this "it's because they want you to upgrade" conspiracy theory bullshit.  There isn't a new phone being released for months anyways.

yeah it is. for a couple older devices. Not sure why but they've been signing it for a while now.

I have 5.0.1 blobs for my wifi iPad 2. I was trying to downgrade it with Odysseus yesterday. ran into an issue where Mac OS El capitan or later apparently can't bump the device out of "Pwned DFU" mode into Recovery mode when you finally go to load the firmware onto it.

So I need to use a Linux box to do that now(which for some reasonI don't have besides my rasp pi). currently have an iPad 2 sitting in DFU mode on my desk at home xD

Also if you load up 6.1.3, you can do an OTA update to iOS 8.4.1. So that is signed; but just OTA only for iOS 6 users. I guess iOS 6 can't go to iOS 9 in one go.

why am I going through all this trouble just for iOS 5? xD I wish I had iOS 4 blobs for my old iPad. Too bad I was too dumb to save them then.
