8 core version of 8700k is coming this Fall!

Alternate.be has it at 749 euros, wth!? Coolblue across the street has it close to 500 euros though... :P

Oh well, I'm still not in the market for a new CPU anyways, all I need is decent gaming performance and my 2600k still does well enough. I'll keep using it until it or the motherboard dies, and then I'll switch to the best performer around at that time.

Their prices are indeed sometimes completely absurd! :-D

Although Coolblue’s prices are also definitely not the lowest ones out there.

As the owner of a 4th-gen Intel CPU who was planning to make a new build in late 2019 or 2020, it looks like I may have to push forward my schedule with how fast Intel is advancing their CPU lineup thanks to the fire AMD has lit under Intel's butts. Going from a  4C/4T to 8C/16T CPU without having to pay for X-series prices? Sign me the hell up.

CPU: Ryzen 9 3900X | Cooler: Noctua NH-D15S | MB: Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite | RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws V 32GB 3600MHz | GPU: EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra | Case: Fractal Design Define R6 Blackout | SSD1: Samsung 840 Pro 256GB | SSD2: Samsung 840 EVO 500GB | HDD1: Seagate Barracuda 2TB | HDD2: Seagate Barracuda 4TB | Monitors: Dell S2716DG + Asus MX259H  | Keyboard: Ducky Shine 5 (Cherry MX Brown) | PSU: Corsair RMx 850W

I'm no expert in this field but I don't think it's as simple as higher density means lower yields... If so then we would be seeing 14nm having much lower yields than 22nm, for example.

Lower yields compared to the equivalent node used by TSMC and GloFlo for Ryzen. I'm talking 14nm vs 14nm.

There is no guarantee the new 8-core will price the same/similar to 8700K. I bet it will be $400-450, compares to $350 of 8700K. Also the Z390 mobo could be more expensive than Z370. You know Intel....

One if the main advantages of their designs isn't just that the cpu is made up of a bunch of 4 core clusters that are fabricated individually but also that they are produced on a massive scale and are being used in their entire product stack. This means that they can take the cpu cores that aren't as good and release them as r7 and r5 while they use the nice ones for epyc and threadripper. That makes the cost of a 8 core r7 actually much lower than a monolithic die ring bus i7, 8 core. They are only producing one product and not in as large if scale as what Zen is. They also have to deal with imperfections being much more detrimental to them than for ryzen. All in all this makes r7 cpus much cheaper as they are just the lower binned modules that have all working components. I would suspect that their 8 core is going to be more expensive than the r7 by a large margin to make up for increase in cost. It also makes me wonder what they will do with semi faulty 8 cores that they make.

The thing is, Intel has a much higher market share than AMD in those regards. The amount of 8 core dies they will sell is probably multiple times more than AMD, which reduces the impact of creating multiple different dies and different designs for different core count dies.

I wouldn't be surprised if the amount of 8700k-type dies in total

There's not really any data out there to support this.

Look at the top sellers for cpus from major retailers and would see that it's clearly not true. Current market share has nothing to do with current sales so I highly disagree with your assessment.

Little overreaction from everyone..

"Intel is panicking, they are going to have to work hard to get back from the hole AMD dug!"

I don't think Intel is very scared.... realistically, we all know that an 8core intel CPU > 8 core AMD CPU. The 8700K can still beat the 2700X in many multi threaded loads, even if we ignore the fact that the 8700k can clock to about a whole GHZ higher than the Ryzen chips can. Intel isn't scared at all...

I'm not referring just to selling individual 8700ks. If that was the case I would agree. I'm talking about the 6 core intel die in general... I can guarantee you that intel sells way more desktops with their cpus inside than amd, and there are way more laptops out there with 6 core H series cpus than amd ryzen 6/8 cores.

you can guarantee nothing without proper evidence. unless you have looked at the numbers there is little way for you to actually know. also I was under the impression laptop cpus weren't created from the same 6 core parts the i7 8700k are but rather a line created for mobile.

In military speak, they would say Intel has lost the vital strategic initiative.

Intel must now respond to AMD's moves rather than vice versa.

Most likely still using toothpaste between the die and heat spreader though...

Toothpaste actually drops about 5C, I've tested it on my 4790...

I'm really not sure what you're referring to. In general I have.

For example:

And Intel knows that the complexity of the design (ie. the density) is preventing them from getting better yields:

I don't think Intel is very scared.... realistically

Scared, no. Worried... at least a little bit. Certainly worried if they can't get their 10nm kinks worked out. If they're still having issues with the process itself by the time Zen 2 hits server, mobile, and desktop that's going to be very bad for them.

you can guarantee nothing without proper evidence. unless you have looked at the numbers there is little way for you to actually know. also I was under the impression laptop cpus weren't created from the same 6 core parts the i7 8700k are but rather a line created for mobile.

When Intel's Client Computing Group Revenue for Q1 2018 is 9 Billion and AMD's Computing and Graphics is just over 1 billion it's pretty hard for me to believe that AMD is selling more Ryzen CPUs than Desktop Intel CPUs, especially when the number of desktop shipments is still around 5/8 of the number of laptop shipments source

While there isn't necessarily hard evidence from some quick searching, considering that the core count, cache count, and EU count are the same for the 6 core H series parts and 6 core S series parts I'm inclined to believe they're the same die.

That Intel article is from 2015-2016, over two years ago, back when skylake was the latest. Due to that I must say yields are probably a lot better now.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

While I do see where you are coming from I would also argue that being able to use the same die that is potentially a server die where the margins are high makes the overall cost saving of having the Zen cpu modular much higher than what Intel has. I mean does Intel have may be similar yields? Probably similar but still worse yields. The you factor in that they can't take this die and potentially put it into one of their ultra high-end sever cpus that go for large margins. Well with Zen they can and this makes the overall profit per die therotically much higher than Intel's 6 core die. I mean an 8 core die is going to have a lower yeild and cost more to produce than two 4 core dies so it would make sense that it will be more expensive. The 8 core cpu from Intel will cost more than the 6 core i7 just like the 6 core i7 cost more than the 4 core i7. I would suspect it will go for around 500 dollars.

so your dream is a binned 2800x that can boost to 4,8 ghz using XFR2?

maybe more along the lines of more cores per ccx and if we are talking about dreams it has to be 5ghz base clock at least ;)
