TeamSpeak gonna make a comeback with TS5? Also here comes Steam!

Finally it looks like Teamspeak are stepping up to compete with Discord, maybe even regain some of the users they lost as they have been sitting back so quietly over the years. Or is it too little too late for them?

All I can find on it at the moment is:

They picked up a new Logo (Ooooh) aimed at gamers.

and a single tweet from them : 

Personally, I still run a 512 slot TS3 server and was just about to migrate to Discord but this news has holted me in my tracks.

 it seems Valve have also jumped on the bandwagon, with Steam Chat (beta) taking everything that is good with discord and merging it with their chat.  some parts are really similar...Possible partnership going on? but then again Valve don't do sharing.

Just food for thought, if TS5 can 1 up them even more i think they will have a good chance.

From what I've seen, Discord is the best. Interested in seeing just how well TS5 can compete.

It will be quite difficult for TeamSpeak to do some real damage to Discord's userbase, especially after Discord has been having consistent performance and feature updates for the past 3 years. At the moment at least, there is very little that Discord is doing wrong, to make people actively search for an alternative, but I am sure that if TeamSpeak does some of the things right, they can eventually gain back some long time users who might have jumped ship.

I wonder if they'll stick to their current revenue model of renting servers (or hosting your own) or if they'll adopt the freemium style model that Discord has.

 

I think a large part of Discords continued success is their virtually non-existant barrier to entry.

Problem is you need a 24/7 uptime PC to run a server. If it works well, it'll be something for that 2600K system to do I guess

In pure voice TS edges out Discord, but in over all I would agree Discord is better.

 

I like TS3 added cloud accounts with setting/bookmark syncing. 

 

They also NEED TO make the phone app free.

 

Why are they skipping 4?

 

I also have a TS3 server with 512 slots.

I rent a VPS for $3/month with backups to host my TS server.

For chat and community discord is far better.

For voice comms teamspeak easily wins with its more reliable, lower latency, and better sounding audio. I just have an old core2duo debian box that has 99.99% uptime (goes down once a month for a few min to do updates) running a server for me and my friends.

I'd imagine Microsoft's own product Teams will be filling that void.

I've used Skype for many years and never had any issues with it. I think it's a great chat program. I've also used TS in the past, and it too seemed to work fine. Never used Discord, so I cannot comment on it.

You should try Discord. I used Skype till about mid 2016. I switched to Discord and haven't ever looked back. Skype is slow, bloaty, crashy and just plain lacking in features.

 

Only thing I hate about Discord is their cringe worthy "gamer" lingo. Just quit that shit already.

I still do not even know what Discord is, but I have used TeamSpeak before, and what I found funny as fuck, was the accents of perfect strangers playing World of Tanks. I did not like TS, but it was required for some dumb ass reason for some teams to join.

 

I never understood why news channels used Skype, it sucks!

 

Not knowing what Discord is, I get the general idea now. Is there video too?

on a slightly related note, I've just updated my Steam (beta) client and discovered that steam have basically duplicated all the good bits of discord in to the steam chat. Hell id go as far as saying its a carbon copy! with the added benefit of having all your steam friends and groups already included.

I doubt TS will be able to take a part of Discord's huge user base. Discord is easier to setup, navigate and communicate with people, and above all, it's free, so much more appealing to a lot more users.

well its really hard to gauge the state of TS5 at this point. we have no details on its UI or functions at all, however as they have just updated their website with a rather small announcement that they are working on it.I can only assume that the data on the new site also applys to TS5 


looking at the steam version which is actually beats discord on some key points for me. such as drag and drop users to invite them, voice chat specific text chat and the incorporation of the join game and trade options.

Yeah.....don't really think most business be looking at Teamspeak.

Where I work around, the video and chat conference is already being shifted to something like Cisco Jabber.

Their policy seems to allow for them to do so, dispite them publicly stating otherwise 

it all stems from the wording, non-identifiable user data is not personal data and can be sold (not saying its currently being sold). this can be text, images, links as they do not directly identify the user, its just content.
