iPad (2018)

minervx

Pros:

  • Higher resolution and vibrant colors
  • Relatively loud and rich speakers for its small size
  • Strong processor runs anything with no slowdown.
  • Apple's 10 hour battery life promise is not exaggerated.
  • Battery is barely consumed, almost not at all, when it is idle
  • iOS's intuitive UI, aesthetic and the App Store
  • Apple Pencil support, which truly sets it apart from many tablets
  • Can pretend to be a laptop well with a keyboard.
  • Good primary camera
  • Affordable price

Cons:

  • Weird aspect ratio makes black bars on video stream.
  • No fast charging/USB-C.  (But at least one charge can power it for days)
  • No speakers on top make the sound unbalanced when turned horizontally
  • Non-laminated display (a minor annoyance, but I hope the 2019 iPad fixes it
  • Bad front camera

Overall, it's a solid well-rounded product that offers a lot of utility for the price.  It's a solid entry point for those who haven't used a tablet before.  It's inferior to the iPad Pro in several ways, but let's be honest.  It's way better than most tablets out there in general.  And it's visuals/sound is way better than your laptop.  It doesn't replace a full computer, but it can handle most of what a budget laptop can handle while being half the size with a keyboard attached.

I've used an iPad Pro for a month and a SP3 for a couple years. I'd take the iPad anyday, and really would like to have one for the rare occassions I need scratch paper for something, but it's just too much to rationalize for the occasional scratch paper.

That being said, I'd personally opt for a used 9.7" iPad Pro (about $300 w/o tax if you're a bit patient) in order to get the laminated screen (and irrelevant for me, but also stereo speakers, and a better camera; albeit at the expense of battery life, cpu, and probably one iOS update).

I only get iPads if it is required by school or I get it as a gift. Wouldn't spend my own money on one.

And at expense of resolution.  Lamination and a good front camera are nice to have, but not exactly essentials like CPU and battery life are.

The resolution is the same. An A9x, while slower, is still just as capable as an A10, and battery life should still be pretty close.
