Lenovo ThinkServer RD350 RAM Upgrade

Hi there, I bought a RD350 Lenovo server, I want to add some RAM.

Originally, the server was delivered with a Hynix HMA41GR7AFR4N-UH 8GB DDR4 memory module.

I have a few questions.

1. Is the Hynix 8GB PC4-17000 2133MHz ECC REG module CL15 Memory Module (HMA41GR7MFR4N-TF) will work with PC4-2400 ECC Reg 2RX8  HMA41GR7AFR4N-UH modules ?

2. Is it necessary to use ECC modules ? (The server serves only as a lab, there will be no commercial services on it).

3. Ordinary memory from the desktop PC (DDR4) will work on this server ?

4. Can I mix ECC with Non-ECC modules ?

No

Yes but you will limit the maximum ram to the same as a desktop CPU.

You don't have to but if you want say more than 64GB of ram then you'll need Registered ECC ram.

Yes that will work well, Samsung is another good option to look at and there is heaps on ebay.

Edit:

FYI if you pair 2133MHz ram with 2400MHz ram the faster ram will down clock to match the slower ram.

Single channel or single rank? For different ranks and Registered ECC memory no don't it almost always doesn't work, non ECC UDIMMs don't seem to care.

Memory channels will just work based on what slots you have populated up to the max the CPU supports, you can run triple channel on a quad channel CPU if you only put 3 DIMMs in (the correct slots).

I think about 64GB of RAM

Is your server configured with two CPUs?

If two CPUs:

8x Samsung M393A1G43EB1-CRC (8GB RDIMM Dual Rank)

https://www.ebay.com/itm/8GB-Module-DDR4-2400MHz-Samsung-M393A1G43EB1-CRC-19200-Registered-Memory-RAM/222362273809?hash=item33c5d30811:g:1jAAAOSwa~BYZtvH

Or if you want to keep the current Hynix 8GB module:

7x Samsung M393A1K43BB0-CRC

https://www.ebay.com/itm/M393A1K43BB0-CRC-SAMSUNG-8GB-1Rx8-PC4-2400T-DDR4-MEMORY/181824225729?epid=1980646177&hash=item2a559181c1:g:f8cAAOSwZQxW2VJt

If one CPU:

4x Samsung M393A2K43BB1-CRC (16GB RDIMM Dual Rank)

https://www.ebay.com/itm/16GB-Module-DDR4-2400MHz-Samsung-M393A2K43BB1-CRC-19200-Registered-Memory-RAM/222362273931?hash=item33c5d3088b:g:H1gAAOSwt5hYZtvQ

I think about second CPU, but later.
So i can buy M393A1K43BB0-CRC for one CPU, and extend configuration by second CPU later ?

Or i need to provide second CPU in order to use second memory banks ?

Need a second CPU to use the other set of memory banks, that's why I split the options up. You could also buy half of the DIMMs for a two CPU configuration then later get then second CPU and RAM to expand from 32GB to the 64GB.

Lenovo claims that I can put in RD350 server max 1TB of DDR4 memory.

So based on their information, I can load 512GB in the first memory bank (one CPU configuration) ?

You could yes but that would be incredibly expensive. Also you can actually put in a total of 3.08TB of ram using 128GB DIMMs that didn't exist when that spec sheet was created, the Xeons that go in the server support them.
