Its the normal lens and digital zoom up to 2x then the telephoto lens kicks in and digital zooms from there. In low light there is even a change the telephoto isnt used at all. 

 

And before you try to defend this, lenses are fixed. And difference between 28-56mm is all digital and even then it appears 1 camera is used at a time. So no, optical is not aiding at every zoom level because physics.

Pretty much. DxO is based on opinions and we all know how that can turn out. 

 

Honestly I wish Dpreview would be the benchmark for cameras. I have used them for years and the consistency and methods of testings is top notch and is rated on a scientific scale.

Physics do not limit the lens from digitally zooming on the optical zoom lens........which the lens does.....

I never said it limits digital zooming. If you read it again I specifically say it is digital zooming...

 

Also the lens doesnt digitally zoom,software does....so no fucking clue at this point what you are getting at. 

 

Lens 1- 28mm fixed lens= any zoom outside 1x is digital up to 2x

Lens 2- 56mm fixed lens= any zoom outside 2x is digital

 

Digital zoom means loss in detail overall

Loss in detail between 1x and 2x and anything over 2x

 

Again case and point that you have to zoom to 2x before the telephoto kicks in which is quite the zoom to constantly use. I was correct.

Yeah, that is basically what Apple said at their Keynote. After 2x, you get the detail of the Optical Zoom Lens, usually fed with lighting detail from the wide angle lens, and you get an objectively better photo. Everything after that you are digitally zooming on that Optical sensor, unless you are too close and the sensor can't focus on the object.

After 2x zoom you DO NOT get the detail of optical zoom. Again its a fixed lens....digital zoom is everywhere. Your points you are defending are not my arguments

 

Also wide angle is much more useful that fixed zoom. Cant zoom out but you can zoom in.

How many times do you actually zoom on your camera opposed to having walk back to get everything in the shot?

It depends on the kind of pictures you take. I mostly take landscapes and wildlife -- so I prefer wide angle and super telephoto lenses -- not that a phone is good for the latter regardless. That being said, I can usually work with the wide angle lens on my phone whereas when I really need the zoom I'm limited to just 2x and I often don't have the ability to just get closer.

 

I'd personally like a wide angle and a super telephoto lens on a phone. It's the 2x zoom that's less useful imo. Something like 24mm, 80mm, and 300mm would be ideal for me (although I suspect that stabilizing a phone at 300mm would be almost impossible in most situations).

That setup I could get behind. Digital zoom between 80 and 300 would be god aweful though!

 

But yes, its very use case based, but the fact is people take more pictures feet from an object on their phones than trying to birdwatch. I would prefer a 18, 50, 300 myself for that reason. I constantly see people taking pictures with their phone and backing up non-stop to get the shot but in some cases you just cant move back. Phone cameras constantly take close shots. 

 

After years of pro photography I will always hands down take a wide angle over a zoom if I had to make a decision of one or the other.

Yes you do, you are digitally zooming on the already optically zoomed lens. That’s not that hard.

It will probably just be black and white for contrast which will help a lot in low light and tracking for AR

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple made a camera. At this point it would make sense. The iPhone has really good processing as it is, arguably the best or one of the best mobile cameras. It would be interesting to see. Would probably be at least $1000 tho. 

 

But there's so much competition they'd have to get it right the first time.

If Apple made a camera it would flop. While phone cameras are good, they cant even touch $500 DSLRs right now.

That's what I mean. They need to make a really good Dslr or something. It's Apple, why would they put out a shitty Dslr? Maybe something on par with the cabin 5d mark 3. Granted it doesn't make any sense but I still think they could pull it off if they got access to the same sensors canon, Samsung, or Sony has.

They would just be expensive. 

They could make a point and shoot...but thats it. DSLRs are built around a branding, accessories are needed and I dont think apple could design a competing DSLR along with quality lenses. 

 

Ask Sony how hard it was to jump in the DSLR game. It took at while and I supported them through all the trash they made until now and even while using Nikon sensors, they couldnt compete. 15 years later and they are finally there.

Read the comment I just posted above. 

 

No way they would be producing a competitive DSLR right off the bat. Sony tried the same sensor technique (they built all of Nikons sensors) and it did not work.
