[Build Log] Rustic Wooden PC [in progress]

So I decided not to remove or paint any of the heatsinks on the new motherboard. It's a really nice board and I don't want to do anything that could possibly damage it. The heatsinks will be mostly hidden by fans and the graphics card anyways. It shouldn't clash with the final look/theme much either.

Had to cut a larger opening on the back of the I/O plate to accommodate the new board.

Got most of the parts primed with a first coat. Looks terrible right now, but that will soon change... ;)

Will be tackling painting the fans today, hopefully. Pulled something in my neck/upper back. Can barely move my head today. :/

The lighting in the pics makes it look orange. It's more of a rusty red.

Guess it doesn't matter because primer is usually covered up. lol

True, but I wouldn't feel comfortable when building something nice like that while knowing that there is an orange layer hiding beneath it. :D

Got everything primed today, including the fans. Not a fan of painting fans, but it's done. Going to let the primer cure fully for at least 24 hours before applying the first coats of the metallic paint.

Can see more of the true colour of the primer in these photos taken with my new phone.

The new power switch. Also planning to add power and HDD LEDs. Just need to figure out where to mount them.

To stay with the theme of the build: you could use an old very small light bulb instead of a LED. That would look very nice at the outside of the wooden crate case.

I second this idea, you have to do that. LEDs are not rustic and would definitely take away from this build

Indeed, LEDs are too “modern” looking compared to the worn/rustic look of the wooden crate case :-)

Can't keep much hidden from you guys, can I? Was actually planning to use something similar;  small automotive light bulbs and sockets instead of LEDs and show it in the final reveal as a surprise. ;)

Will be interesting to see how the storage activity light reacts since old-school bulbs can't "flicker" on/off as quickly as LEDs. Planning to visit Princess Auto today after work and see what they have.

I do enjoy seeing PCs done in timber :) Really brings rig building into more of an art form.

I personally am looking at finally getting around to building my 19th century styled machine. My drawer systems were a "proof-I-can-do-it" to myself.

First coat of copper paint has been applied to the RAM, GPU and CPU coolers. Didn't turn out as "smooth" as I would like. Wish it was spray paint, could have done a much better job. But everything is supposed to look really old, so hopefully it will fit the aesthetics. :S Parts of these components will be corroded anyways, so probably won't notice the brush streaks in the end, I hope. lol. ;)

First coat of copper paint has been applied to the RAM, GPU and CPU coolers. Didn't turn out as "smooth" as I would like. Wish it was spray paint, could have done a much better job. But everything is supposed to look really old, so hopefully it will fit the aesthetics. :S Parts of these components will be corroded anyways, so probably won't notice the brush streaks in the end, I hope. lol. ;)

Will post pics in the morning.

You could've diluted it and sprayed it with an airbrush, it could possibly work with that paint as I've done it with paints like that before where I didn't want to brush it on

Indeed, I bought a cheap airbrush on eBay exactly for this specific reason. It has worked wonders for difficult to paint surfaces that would otherwise produce such brush strikes.

Yeah airbrushes are great for small projects like that, I've never used the paint OP is using but dilute it enough I'm sure it'll work. I use to run a paint and body shop and had plenty of cheap airbrushes for stuff I wasnt sure about lol

A ‘paint and body shop’ as in car painting? Do you use those small airbrushes for car bodies/exteriors as well? Didn’t knew that :-)

OK, I know what kind of airbrush you are talking about. I thought you meant this on:

Then it would take quite a long time to paint a car though :D

Yeah I painted any and everything. From cars, motorcycles, laptops, and stainless steel cups. You're thinking of a spray gun, we had both types, the airbrush like in your photo we used mostly for detail work and that's the type I was referring to so you wasn't mistaken.  Hopefully we gave OP some ideas for the future though :D
