Windows 10 Ugly??

I am curious to know what you all think about the look of Windows 10. I personally feel that Microsoft kind of dropped the ball when it comes to looks regarding Windows 10. I personally like the look of Windows 7 much better and wish that Microsoft would have incorporated some of the same look to Windows 10. I guess I am just not a fan of the new Metro Look. What do you think?

I'm sorta split on it. I don't use the tiles, and ever since they added the Windows key + x shortcut in Windows 8.1 (which has carried forward to Windows 10), I don't actually need to go to the start menu for anything when using mouse and keyboard. I just windows key then type (for program names), or windows key + r for a binary. This is exactly how I used windows 7, with the difference that I right click on the start button to access things like settings, mmc snap ins, etc, instead of selecting them on my start menu.

 

It does feel a bit weird having so much functionality I don't use, but my partner has a surface and the tiles really help... so I can see why they're there, and in the grand scheme of things my workflow hasn't changed since Windows 7. Overall looks are subjective, I prefer the darker by default menu and it cleans up nicely when you get rid of tiles.

If Microsoft incorporated more glass in their design (which they are currently bringing back with fluent design), it would like really good. But yea, was never a fan of the flat route they went for Windows 8. I was an early adopter of Windows 8 because I got a new laptop at the time and immediately hated how flat everything looked even when compared to Windows XP. It felt like I went back to my Windows 98/ME days.  

 

That being said, I still maintain that Windows Vista is the handsomer of the bunch. Windows 10 is slowly getting there.

I like windows 7 better.

 

I think start menu is better. Also, the search bar is better. I always have an issue looking for something in Windows 10. 7 always finds what I am looking for. I hate a lot of the apps on the windows app store. A majority are bloatware, and the constant built-in apps that 10 has in the OS that breaks it if you remove them is rediculous. . .

I love Windows 10 better, yet think the Microsoft App Store is complete and utter garbage.

IDK... I have no issues with the W10 looks or design. I see many people complaining and going back to 7 but I think they are just mostly exaggerating or just don't want to get used to a few new stuff. I could never go back to 7.

If you consider decades of UI research were thrown out the window (snerk) in favour of the abortion that is the UI of Win10, then you know why the "flat look" is a terrible idea.

Windows Vista was hands down the best looking OS in my opinion as well. To bad Vista didn't function as good as it looked. Windows 8.1 was a solid OS as far as functionality (Minus the Home Screen) but Windows 8.1 icons still looked pleasing to the eye; where Windows 10 icons are just flat dull!

To be fair... the Windows 8.1 icons were essentially carried over from 7... which were carried over from Vista. A few icons may have been added/changed (OS drive for example), but for the most part, the common ones you see everyday were there since Vista.

I believe windows 10 would look a lot better with all the bloatware uninstalled. One thing I wish like heck microsoft would fix is the stupid search function in the start menu. Cortana is dumb as a brick when it comes to searching your programs... Type "up" and windows update comes up. Continue typing "upda" it disappears.

I actually prefer the XP Classic styled GUI, with Vista's GUI coming in as a close second. I reeeeeeeeeeeeeally miss those dockable toolbars.

Your right! Honestly, Vista was a very good looking design. It's to bad that it didn't operate as well as it looked.

Yea they shot themselves in the foot for making it seem that a Windows XP machine at the time could comfortably run Vista. You also had machines back in the day with a single core Celeron and 1GB of RAM shipped with Vista. It was hopeless. Heck, Windows 7 could barely run with those specs when it came out. The odds were stacked against it from the start.

I couldn't agree more! It is kind of interesting how many articles are out on the web talking about how ugly Windows 10 is, yet Microsoft does nothing to improve the UI. It makes me wondering if they are secretly working on a new version of Windows?! I know that Microsoft has come out and stated that Windows 10 will be the last major release for Windows. I personally beg to differ.. There is way to much money involved with major releases.

Yeah, Windows 10's UI is an ugly eyesore. I do what I can with 3rd party replacements for the start menu (Startisback, Start 10, or Classic Shell), taskbar, icons, and possibly the title bars (when Aero Glass gets updated). I can't even bear to use Windows 10 until its UI design is comprehensively modified. It's just plain fugly, even grotesque.

 

Some of Windows 10's native customization functionality is broken, though. For example, if the recycle bin icon is replaced with a custom one using Windows 10's icon selection functionality, it breaks the recycle bin so that it no longer switches between full and empty icons when files are sent to it, or when the recycle bin is emptied. To get the recycle bin icon to update to the proper one, you need to right-click on the desktop and select 'refresh' to get the recycle bin to update to its proper status.

 

Bad design seems to be ubiquitous in Windows 10. Maybe Microsoft fired their skilled designers for the sake of saving money (like they did with their OS testing engineers). But Windows 10 looks like it was designed by some eccentric who wanted to force people to use an OS that looks according to their fringe taste, rather than by what is widely understandable as being aesthetic, and appreciated. Why Microsoft let Windows 10's bad design make it into release, who knows. I guess there isn't a lot of overview within the individual departments at Microsoft, and the heads of those departments just do whatever they personally want, rather than what benefits the project as a whole.

 

 

Also, I agree that Vista is the nicest-looking Windows yet. I have my Windows 7 OS customized to look like Vista.

I wish Microsoft could Make Windows 10 look like Windows Vista!! I do not think it would take that much effort on their end since they have the resources for both. If Microsoft came out with and update that make Windows 10 look like Vista I would be a happy camper!! But, I do not see Microsoft veering away from the flat, ugly UI Windows 10 currently has. Honestly to me it seems as though Windows 10 is a step back in time to the Windows ME days..

I hate the glass design of Vista and 7, and I never used them for personal computing. I like the designs of all other Windows versions just fine. You can also customize Windows 10 with third-party themes to make it look different.

Windows 10 has a modern design and you can turn off all the tiles and customize it to look like windows 7. 7 is solid but 10 is the future

The "glass" design wasn't my favourite either.

For Windows 10: I'm not really into third party customisation. I set everything to have a black theme and I have a (mostly) black background.

All of the live tiles have also been removed from the start menu.

Is there any third party software out there that makes Windows 10 look like Vista/7? I have used Classic Shell but it has been buggy.
