Does GTX has a meaning?

Notmally when we are talking about a nvidia GeForce graphics card we say gtx 1060/1070/1080 etc...

But I was wondering does GTX actually stand for anything? What about the other types like GT or GTS does any of these has a meaning or is any of them an acronym?

GT 10 (x) I think. Before the GTX lineup there was gt 9000-, 8000-, 7000-series (etc). Maybe I'm wrong but this has always been my assumption

GTX has been around for a LONG time. You are incorrect. The 8800GTX was the first card that I remember that had the GTX designation. There is no designated meaning or acronym it means, its just their top tier "gamer" cards.

It doesn't MEAN anything it's just a series letters in a 'cool sounding arrangement' and they've used others in the past.  Like the GT, GS, GTS, or SE.  They use them to denote some things about different SKU models but they don't have an actual definition themselves.  Especially since every card is 'GTX' except for the GT 1030.

In the automotive world, GT originally meant Gran Turismo (Italian for Grand Tourer) which was used to designate a long distance driving performance car. Since thenm it's usage has been hijacked for use other than in the automotive world. In all usages, it became so overused, manufactureres started tacking on letters to make their version standout amongst the crowd of other GTs. anymore, it has become pretty much meaningless do to overuse.

The 7800GTX was the first to sport the GTX branding. The closest thing before that was the 6800GT and the GeForce 2 GTS series.

 

The GTS in the GeForce 2 GTS series stands for GigaTexel Shader. I'm sure GTX means something similar.

Back in that time there was "Ultra" that was better than GTX

6000 series brought the GT as Ultra -1 branding.

7000 series brought GTX as Ultra -1 and GT as Ultra -2.

8000-9000 series continued this branding.

200 series moved it to the beginning of the card name with GTX being "gamer" and GT being "pleb".

 

AFAIK GTX means nothing.  There were also GTO/GS/XT/LE cards.  It hails from an era of slapping random letters at the end of your model number that sound like sports car trim levels.

Exactly. It is just some kind of simulacrum of Race Car letters that sound "fast"

In race cars, GT stands for Gran Touring or Gran Turismo. The X doesnt mean anything, it just sounds more better, more cooler.

 

Same this with the Ti appendix behind 1070Ti, 1080Ti. Supposedly it means Titanium, but I don't think any Titanium is involved in making them, it is just meaningless marketing.

For a while everyone was trynna make their cards seem like some automotive part - now we have 'Turbo', 'GTR' etc. Just marketing

This names comes from the Texels fill rate / Texels per second. Nvidia GPU's are the first to brake the Giga Texel per second and this was indicated with the GT.

VooDoo 2 for example could reach theoretical maximum of 180 Mega Texels per second.

 

TNT = Twin Texel (Riva TNT)

MX = Milion/Mega Texel (geforce 4 MX)

GT = Giga Texel

GTS = Giga Texel Shader

GTX = Giga Texel Shader eXtreme

RTX = Ray Tracing Texel eXtreme

 

There was article about that names in 2000 on nVidia website, but does not exist anymore.

For example

GTX 1060 (pascal) has 120.5 Gigatexels/sec
GTX 2060 (turing) has 224.4 Gigatexels/sec
