PC not working cause MotherBoard outdated????

So my friend in Canada, ordered parts from Amazon. 

Started to assemble the PC, and boom, it is not booting. 

Nothing. Only the led lights are working on the PC.

So he was devastated, eventually after what he went to PC store, where he was told that the Mother board needed an update. 

Did you ever heard of that issue? Or something in that matter?

It's an AMD build. 

Asus mother board . Not that it even matters!

Yeah its a BIOS update, if you got an older motherboard, they need an update to use newer cpus that were not released at the time the board was.

If it's a Ryzen 2000 series chip on a 300 series chipset motherboard, then it's not surprising. A BIOS update will do.

The hassle of doing that still beats buying an intel chipset motherboard that only has a lifespan of 1 generation that seems to lasts 3months nowadays.

This is the MB, does it look like it need an Bios Update?

ALso, how are you suppose to know that you need and update to make it work.

Every person will be frustrated. It is not supposed to be like that, this is at least what I think.

You buy a Motherboard from 2017, a new cpu comes out in 2018, unless you update that motherboard that new cpu will not work if it was not originally put into the code upon release

If you bought a Ryzen 2000 series CPU Yes you will need to update it. You have to do a bit of research or just know about it, otherwise you will see this happen and go to the store to people who know what they are doing hopefully.

This is my MB and my CPU is i7 4790k.  Different years, so by logic, my PC was not supposed to work. But it did. 

I really don't get it.

4770k 4790k are the same chip, just the 4790k fixed what was wrong with the 4770k. 

 

Ryzen 1700 is a different chip then the Ryzen 2700, Different Manufacturing. Ryzen 1700 is 14 nm, and Ryzen 2700 is 12 nm

 

4770k is 22 nm, and the 4790k is also 22nm for the process in making it.

AMD actually continued to support their original (chipset) motherboards by releasing new CPU's(thats a new generation) for it. Where Intel in recent years wont support a chipset for more than 1 generation, and even split same-gen processors between multiple chipsets with (in some cases) no other obvious reasoning for it, other than a blatant cash grab as far as i can tell.

AMD has a long history of compatibility across platforms with a simple BIOS update. For example, you could have bought an AM2+ board back in the day to go with your original Phenom processor. Then, provided your motherboard vendor provided the appropriate BIOS update, you could have the capability to run a Phenom II (originally released with AM3) chip in your existing AM2+ board. 

 

I don't follow AMD a lot these days so I'm not 100% if this is the case with the updates coming to Ryzen. But given their track record, it's seems likely this is the case.

Why  would any one do something like this ?

OMG . I so don't get the meaning of all this. And also , why would the entire Pc will not work cause of that.

There should be a way for a person sitting at home to know about this issue, if it already happened , also, he should be able to fix it him self. But how can he, if PC wont start. 

I was actually thinking that the PSU Is faulty.

Pc wont start because it does not recognize the cpu in its socket.

 

Lets say you have a car, you have a 2008 Honda Civic. You have your garage set up to open up when it gets into the driveway. You now just bought a 2010 Civic and tried driving to the garage but it wont open. Its the same type and model car, but because you didnt update the garage to recognize that its your car it will not open. When you update the garage door opener to recognize your new car, it will now work for both the older car and now the newer one.

Mate! This is best explanation. 

I really find this so irritating, Specially, when you get new parts for PC. And you don't have the necessary tools to check the compatibility

It was essentially done to provide users an upgrade path without having to purchase an entirely new board. An entire PC would not work if your upgraded to a newer CPU without the BIOS update as the BIOS essentially wouldn't know how to interact with the CPU properly. 

 

Someone who does this would've done their research on the matter as this isn't something average joe who bought their PC at BestBuy would do (in fact many OEMS don't even support this feature).

2. - Good thing I am not the one that fell in this matter. 

3. - When I was checking my MB and CPU, I did not see anything that could point of possibility to have issue in this kind of state.

1. Yes. If you bought a z170 Board (designed for the 6700k) and a 7700k, you needed to update the bios in order for it to be recognized in most cases as far as i know.

Well you should always check for compatibility before you buy. Which is why sites like https://pcpartpicker.com/ come in handy.
