Looking for a new laptop thats thin, professional looking and powerful?

Hey LTT,

 

How's everyone doing? As the title says I am looking for a laptop. Keep in mind I already have a desktop but looking for a good laptop as well. This will be in Canada and I am looking to spend between $1000 to $2200 (dad offered $1200 and I can spend max $1000). The thing is I am doing a risk management business in the side as something to do while I look for engineering jobs/masters and doing side projects, so I can't be carrying a heavy/flashy laptop, but at the same time I want this to be a good investment, so I am looking for something that can be as powerful or be able to handle anything I through at it like my desktop. So I am thinking something that can good at office productivity but can handle say gaming or audio/video editing on the downtime or handle side projects such as programming, 3D, hpc simulation/visualization and such. So i was eyeing the XPS 15 for $1899.99CDN and it has the 256 SSD for boot speed, an i7 7th gen cpu and a gtx 1050, so its slim and not to flashy but it has the hardware for me to both game and yet handle anything i through at it.

 

Thoughts? Is the surface powerful enough?

Is battery life important to you? XPS 15 has many issues too

I was thinking that too, i was looking at best buy, and there were some "gaming" hp laptops with a 1050ti and an i5, it was cheaper but idk about hp.

Well i was looking for something that would last the work day doing email, word processing, browsing, music and video. The buisness aspect of it is all based on network acessing, so I would have high network up time. For everything else I would be home so being plugged in is a non issue imo. What sort of issues does the XPS have?

After reading the thread, I went to the Ms store here and to my surprise the Asus rog laptop was cheaper and had better hardware. Lucky for me the rog logo was not led lit and it was silver. Bought that instead for $2100.00cdn. They added in office 365 for free when I bought warranty.

Asus GL series laptops runs HOT. Personally I'll avoid them

No problems with mines. This one had adequate cooling and is thin and stealthy enough to take for business. So far so good.

How do you know it has adequate cooling?

Get a Latitude, like an E7480 or even an E7470 off of refurb.  XPS is definitely not in Dell's professional line.

XPS is high end line, Latitude is business line (7000 series is premium side)

I have been using it for several days now, no issues with it heating up or thermal throttling. That's how I know. Now i know maybe down the line I'll have to repast the TIM but for now its okay.
