Future Proof Laptop?

Hello, I am looking to buy a laptop, but I can't seem to choose or fix my mind on a particular one.

I am a student and I am trying to get a new laptop. My parents said that once I get it, I will have to use it for 4-5 years.

Because of this, I am currently trying to look for a more future proof laptop.

Is there any laptop out there that is good enough?

Although I don't particularly plan to use it for video rendering or whatnot... I do play games pretty often.

Almost every summer, I visit Korea and I want to be able to play games often.

Because of this, the laptop should have:

  • good graphics: mx150, 940mx is fine
  • ultrabook: weight doesn't matter too much, but thickness does
  • budget: < $800 (I can go up to $1000, but I prefer not to)
  • Display: IPS panel...quiet a bit important
  • I do have a interest in 2 in 1 and touchscreen but its not necessary.

So far I have looked at:

Acer Swift 3     -   https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0746P25QX/ref=psdc_13896615011_rv_t3_B0786TPWBP (Not to sure if it will be too future proof)

Asus Vivobook S     -   https://www.amazon.com/VivoBook-i7-8550U-GeForce-Windows-S510UN-EH76/dp/B0786TPWBP (Lot of review say build quality is a bit questionable)

HP Spectre 15    -   https://www.amazon.com/HP-Spectre-15-BL152NR-TouchScreen-Laptop/dp/B0799849GX/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1526346851&sr=1-4&keywords=hp+spectre+x360&dpID=41kSMygdEAL&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch#customerReviews (1. Its expensive, 2. refurbished)

Lenovo Flex 15    -   https://www.amazon.com/2018-Lenovo-Flex-15-Laptop/dp/B07CX7Y1ZW/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1526526795&sr=8-6&keywords=940mx+lenovo+yoga (I would rather get the HP).

Asus UX331     -   https://www.amazon.com/UX331UN-WS51T-Ultra-Slim-WideView-Processor-Fingerprint/dp/B078T1715R/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1526606200&sr=8-5&keywords=mx150&dpID=41oYWmSOEcL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch (compared to HP Spectre...nah)

Acer Aspire 5     -   https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-i5-8250U-GeForce-A515-51G-515J/dp/B075KCJHMD/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1526606200&sr=8-1&keywords=mx150&dpID=51HItPP1h3L&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch (questionable build quality, pretty thicc, and tn panel)

I'm confused. I initially wanted HP Spectre because of the design and specs...but is the price worth it? Refurbished?

Thanks...

why not just sell it in two years and buy a replacement.

to be honest i bought my laptop at a pawn shop for about 280$ 2 years ago. so technically you should be able to fit 2 or 3 laptops into the 800$ budget over the course of 5 years so i wouldn't worry about longevity

ESPECIALLY if you're a student. whatever you buy will probably get dropped or stolen or have something spilled on it. So breaking a 280$ laptop isn't as bad as breaking an 800$ laptop.

my advice , buy a beater.

Forget the mx 150 and get a gtx 1050 this one is way more powerful, though it is a last gen CPU, it is as powerful as an 8550u. P.S. there is no such thing as a future proof laptop, you can come close with thunderbolt and external GPUs.

Neither will 800. An 800$ laptop will still have a pretty bad gpu in it. and in 5 years it'll be a VERY bad gpu.

heck a gtx 1080 in 5 years won't be a good gpu.

Sorry I didn't notice that it was 0.2" thicker. but it makes sense since how else would they fit a gtx 1050 which is 190%-230% as powerful as an mx150.

yeah, but it will be pretty good for another 2-3 years and I will be able to play some older games or less taxing games at low settings after 4-5 years.

I mean I've played rainbow six siege on gt630 at the lowest settings at 40fps...

tbh, is really depend on what are you using it for.

I have a 9 years old laptop for my mom to play farmville and is fine for her. But for me I need the performance

There is no such thing as future proofing. Just get the one that fit you now

Don't think about futureproofing when it comes to tech.

Something new will ALWAYS be around the corner and there will ALWAYS be improvements in performance and other parts. Rumor has it that the new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 11 GPUs will have a performance bump that's significant over the GTX 10 series (though don't expect Pascal vs Maxwell levels of improvements in performance-per-watt).

Instead, get the best of what you can afford at the current time. Unless the new machines arrive in the next month or so, or a new laptop isn't of crucial importance, it's best to get the best of what you can afford currently rather than endlessly waiting for the next big thing
