Modem will not let me connect directly

I have bought a switch for my modem to allow me to connect my PC on windows 10 and my apple airport extreme that way i could use both but upon plugging it into my PC is says unidentified network through the Ethernet cable and it will not let me use it. so i have had to continue to plug my Ethernet cord into my airport instead of the switch. would there be any way to fix or use Ethernet directly through my modem and not my airport

What kind of switch?

Some are dumb switches and will not hand out IP addresses (that's what a router is for)

What switch did you buy and how did you connect it to the router?

it is a netgear gs605 it said it could connect to a modem

What's wrong with the airport? Is there a reason you can't hook the switch up to it?

the airport is not giving me the full speed of direct hookup to the modem so i bought a switch and plugged the modem in and the the airport and then tried my pc. the airport is working fine though

Perhaps the airport and the modem are fighting over who gives out the IP address?

It probably took for granted that your modem was also acting as a router. If you use a separate modem that doesn't offer router functionality it won't work. You can connect the switch directly to the airport or, if the modem does have router functionality and they are simply disabled, enable dhcp on the modem (and disable it on the airport).

What if you both, then plug in JUST the PC? Do you get any internet that way? Also, I've got an Airport Extreme, and I don't experience any bottleneck through that when compared to directly from my modem.

the modem has no functionality i cant access the modem settings at all

I unplugged the airport from the switch and plugged my pc back into the switch and it doesnt work still

2. If it's a pure modem then it will hand out ONE IP address to the first thing that asks and ignore all additional requests meaning if you hook up a switch and connect multiple things then only the first thing that asks will get an IP (A public IP) and nothing else will get an IP address. If you swap devices you need to reboot the modem for it to hand out a new address.

3. What internet speed are you paying for?

4. What model airport? What speeds are you seeing when connecting through it?

1. it doesnt say i looked for it forever i cant find it on the modem it was given by our isp

3. 50 mbps although its supposed to be 60

4. its the newest model (dont know off top of head) connecting through it gives me about 15 Mbps over wired and about 2 over 5ghz wireless

i only get internet by having the modem and the airport plugged into the switch and then plugging my pc into the airport

What CAT level Ethernet cable are you using? This shouldn't be a problem, but I don't know why else you airport would be bottle necking your connection so significantly.

it should be cat 5 i can check but i was not the one who originally set up the modem.

Then you need to plug the switch in the airport's second ethernet port. Modem->airport->switch.

then thats not going to solve the problem that basically how it is already i want the modem to give the airport internet and my computer internet. my computer is already hooked  up to the airport plugging the switch into it wont make a difference

That's not possible if it's a pure modem with no router functionality as I mentioned previously.

Any chance you can get us pictures of the modem?

i found the modem it is a aris tm106. it was a replacement our old one supposedly got fried in a thunderstorm
