Stuck on black Screen with cursor startup

Go to solution Solved by Princess Luna,

If any thing looks like an issue with the HDD

About 3 months ago I started having issues with my computer starting up.

I was running windows 7 and it would have a few different symptoms, sometimes it would boot up with just a black screen with a cursor other times it would come up with please wait freeze for about 5 minutes then BSOD.

I can boot into safe mode just fine, but system restore wouldn't work. Running startup repair finds nothing wrong.  Luckily I do daily backups of my computer so I would just restore it from the backup the night before. And it would boot up just fine. Unfortunately it would do the exact same thing a few days later. (I don't reboot or turn my computer off very often it may just be the next reboot)

I figured this was an strange software issue. so I decided to do a complete reinstall of windows and go to windows 10.

It worked find for a few days including multiple reboots (installing software etc) unfortunately today I installed some software that required a reboot and first I got stuck on a black screen with the spinning windows 10 startup circles. I did a hard reset and not I am stuck on my favorite black screen with a cursor on startup.

Any ideas where to go from here? Guessing is maybe a hardware issue? I did replace my ram in the middle of all of this so we can cross off bad ram. Apart from the startup issues everything appears to be running just fine if I can get windows booted, it runs perfectly.

Edit

Oh I have also tried disabling all non Microsoft services still gets a black screen on bootup

Yes, the drive is dying.

Have you flashed the BIOS of your mobo recently?

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

Yes I have fliashed my bios to the last version asus has.

This is an SSD not a HDD but I will see if I have a spare floating around here. If not I can steal a SSD out of my old laptop for a good test.

Oh it looks like it was one of my secondary HDDs. I unplugged all secondary drives and it booted just fine. The weird thing is I have unplugged them before under windows 7 and it didn't work. So I had crossed secondary drive issues off of my list. At least I am 90% sure i did :). Maybe I just thought I did when I actually didn't do it. It is hard to remember what I have and haven't done over a 3 month period of troubleshooting. Or maybe I had hard rebooted windows so many times from the hardware issue it corrupted windows and created a software issue.

Or maybe Windows 10 is a bit more forgiving.

Well now it is time to figure out what drive is the bad one. :)
