Any advice on losing weight?

Hey, I want to start losing weight and sort my life out a little bit but, the problem is I have no idea where to start.

 

So far I stopped drinking sodas and started eating less but, that's about it.

I know that I will need a diet and some sort of physical activity. I was thinking about cycling for example.

It's nice and simple and, not as embarrassing as running or going to a gym.

 

I don't know where to start so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I guess it's about time I did an Update here but first thank you all for the replies. :)

 

So far I've lost around 13 Kg which isn't all that much but, I'm very happy that I was able to do this. :D

 

I've been a lot more active and, I parted with a lot of bad habits like eating for no reason or before bed.

At first, it wasn't all that easy but, after a while, I got used to it.

 

When the weather allows it, I go out and walk or cycle around town and, to be honest, it made me happier after I've gotten used to moving so much.

 

Hopefully, I'll be able to lose around 10-12 more through next year.

If you have stairs, run up and down them.  Start with sets of 25, work to 50.  Once you have develop routine, shift to full body execsies and tone up.

 

I lost 100 pounds from stairs alone.  Play some music and run and down you go.

You could gain a great deal just by walking. If you live in even a slightly hilly area just briskly walking will wear you out and give good exercise over the course of half an hour to an hour.

 

I also don't believe there is anything embarrassing about running. Though you would not be able to do that for very long, it will wear you out very quickly. Jogging and walking are probably better starting points.

 

If you merely walk for half an hour perhaps twice a day you will not only get good exercise for your cardio and stamina, but also improve your metabolism.

I mean I lost 38lbs in 3 months by just eating normally nothing super special or healthy but biking around 100-200 miles a week

i found the Gym to be a very weird place, like you i get embarrassed about running / working out near people as you feel bad when you see someone doing better than you,

i drummed up the courage to go and no one really notices you everyone is just doing their own thing, i like to get Netflix up on my phone when i'm on a treadmill / cross trainer and just go into my own little world, As Pipnina said walking is a great way to do it

 

Another thing i found really useful / interesting was counting calories using an app on my phone it was really eye opening to see what everything you ate adds upto and as long you burn more than you consume the weight will fly off :)

I also don't believe there is anything embarrassing about running. Though you would not be able to do that for very long, it will wear you out very quickly. Jogging and walking are probably better starting points.

 

If you merely walk for half an hour perhaps twice a day you will not only get good exercise for your cardio and stamina, but also improve your metabolism.

Well the city I live in is pretty flat but the place I work at is at the other end of the city so for starters walking to work doesn't sound like a bad idea.

Though, I could only do that every second week because I work in two shifts.

It's not exact for intake but I generally just look at how much stuff is and ballpark how much you ate. Always make your estimates higher than you think. Then for how much I burn I use an Apple Watch

Provided your body doesn't go into starvation mode (which it would) you could lose half a kilogram a day just from not eating. Natural chemical processes in the body can vary your weight massively in a single day, which is why it is recommended to always weigh yourself at the same time of day.

 

Now consider if you are not gaining or losing weight at 2500kcal/day. if you cut that down to 2000 without exercise you are basically gonna lose like 50/100 grams a day. Then factor in exercise which brings your net calorie intake lower. Of course the more you exercise (assuming little or none was done before) the more muscle would naturally build up. Muscle takes more energy to maintain than fat so you then burn more calories just by existing.

As long as you burn more calories than you eat you will lose weight.

  • avoid drinking beer 
  • cut down the refined carbohydrates (white rice, white bread, etc)
  • do not drink your carbs, swap the juice or pepsi with purified water. 
  • instead of eating three heavy meals a day, try eating five light meals a day to improve satiety 
  • avoid fast food 
  • eat avocados if you can 
  • combine resistance and cardio exercises (at least 30 minutes a day) 
  • adding salt is fine but not too much as it can cause bloating and water retention so limit intake when 
  • If you're going to a coffee shop like Starbucks, don't buy the Frappuccino since it's not actually coffee but it's mostly sugar 
  • Set reasonable but attainable weight loss goals (either losing 0.5 lbs or 1 lb a week)
  • avoid the buffet table if you can 
  • increase intake of fruits and vegetables 
  • some studies suggest that drinking green tea might help in boosting metabolism so why not (just don't drink it 3 hours before or after taking dairy products)

And lastly...

  • Think of that one person you hate the most and use that as an inspiration. Whether it's an ex who cheated on you or anyone you have a beef with. :P

That said, there's absolutely more and less healthy and effective ways to go about this, but at the end of the day this will always be true.

you need to eat healthy and work out/break a sweat.

you need to never drink cola

you need to never ingest sugar

you must eat leafy greens, vegetables and lean meats like chicken, turkey, fish.

you need to use more calories then you bring in burning off the fat!

 

I use caffeine pills, I have to pay attention to what I eat because it lessens the urge to eat and snack.

Just try to eat as healthy as you can, eat less then you usually do- it helps to eat slower, and get in some walking and maybe do some yoga and sit-ups. Also, stop drinking soda. I've lost around 20 lbs doing this so far.

I'm glad I basically only drink water. But then I remember I stuff my face with like half a packet of bourbon creams a day so that probably counteracts the healthy drinking...

I've lost over 7 kilos by walking about 5Km per day and using stairs instead of lifts. No need to run, just walk at a brisk pace.

When I go to work, I get off one station before my destination and walk the rest of the way.

During my lunch hour, I go for a 20 minute walk.

I haven't really stopped eating anything in particular, but I've never been a fan of fried or sugary foods to start with.
