  • Talking pointOn wednesday, Nvidia announced in a blogpost their intention to cancel the GeForce Partner Program

  • How it would work: If ASUS was an NVIDIA GPP partner, and it wanted to continue to use NVIDIA GPUs in its ROG branded video cards, computers, and laptops, it could not sell any other company's GPUs in ROG products.

    • And guess who’s going to be awarded the existing branding?

  • The post framed the cancellation as relenting to “rumours, conjecture, and mitruths” rather than continuing to “battling misinformation”.

    • “today we are pulling the plug on GPP to avoid any distraction from the super exciting work we’re doing to bring amazing advances to PC gaming.”

  • “GPP was about making sure gamers who want NVIDIA tech get NVIDIA tech.”

  • Will the dedicated brands like Arez survive?

    • Will Gigabyte’s Rx 580 Gaming Box get the premium branding back?

      • Some people think the brands that have already invested in the fork will stick with it

      • I’m not so sure...

  • Is the agreement still in force in the background?

T-Mobile/Sprint Merger

Source 1: THeEmpire.01 https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/921954-sprint-and-t-mobile-have-announced-that-they-will-merge/?tab=comments#comment-11296682

Source 3: https://newsroom.t-mobile.com/news-and-blogs/5gforall.htm

  • T-Mobile and Sprint finally agreed to a massive telecom merger after years of negotiations.

  • The move combines the third and fourth largest wireless service providers in the US

    • The combined company will have nearly 100 million customers.

  • Sprint and T-Mobile first discussed a merger in 2014 but scrapped it because of concerns about regulatory challenges from the Obama administration.

  • The deal was blocked because regulators determined that the wireless market could support four major players, and having them compete benefited consumers.

    • 5"It will be difficult to convince the Justice Department that circumstances have changed so much that it's necessary to go down to three providers," he said. "That's the major hurdle that has to be confronted."

      • But maybe now, framed as a fight for 5G dominance against Asia, they could succeed

  • The outcome of that $85 billion merger depends on a case in federal court, which is pending the decision of the judge.

  • The new company will be called T-Mobile

  • Could 3 more equally-sized players be MORE competitive?

DRAM Price Fixing

Source 2: https://regmedia.co.uk/2018/04/30/dramlawsuit.pdf

  • Law firm Hagens Berman has filed a class action lawsuit against Samsung, Micron, and Hynix

  • According to the firm's investigation, the three DRAM manufacturers conspired to limit the supply of DRAM chips between 2016 and 2017 with the purpose of inflating their prices

    • DRAM saw a 47% increase in price during 2017, the largest jump ever in the last 30 years

    • Samsung, Micron and Hynix collectively own 96 percent of the worldwide DRAM market

  • The complaint, has been put forward on behalf of anyone in the US who purchased something containing DRAM from one of the three companies from July 1, 2016 through the February 1, 2018

  • The suit claims that, after a global decline in the price of RAM chips, the three companies began in June of 2016 to deliberately limit their output of DRAM storage chips.

  • the suit claims, you can actually track the bumps in DRAM prices to the aftermath of industry events where the three companies would have had a chance to sit down and plan together how they could get top dollar.

  • from 1998-2002, Hynix, Samsung, and Micron were among a group of vendors who would ultimately end up paying a settlement to end complaints they conspired to rig the price of DRAM chips

HP printer firmware breaches Australian consumer laws.

Source 1: killcomic https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/923414-hp-firmware-update-breached-australian-consumer-laws/

Source 2: https://www.arnnet.com.au/article/640751/hp-compensate-aussie-customers-after-third-party-ink-cartridge-block/

  • Talking pointHP Australia's printer customers could be eligible for compensation after the vendor sold 220,000 printers without informing buyers that non-HP ink cartridges may not work in them.

  • What prevented the cartridges from working was HP's “dynamic security failure” technology designed to prevent non-HP ink cartridges from being used in HP printers.

    • The printers either came with the software or had it installed in a firmware update later. (fall 2016)

  • “Consumers were not made aware of the restriction on using non-HP ink cartridges when buying the printer or downloading the firmware update, and were denied the choice to accept or reject it.”

  • HP is offering consumers who were prevented from using a non-HP cartridge compensation of $50.

    • More than 2,000 customers who used non-HP cartridges are likely to have been affected by the conduct, making total compensation for consumers over $100,000.

  • Equihash is the algorithm used by

    • Zcash, Zencash, Bitcoin Gold, BitcoinZ, Bitcoin Private, Komodo, Zclassic,

  • Equihash was meant to prevent centralization of the mining process in the hands of a few first-class miners with specialized mining hardware, and thus contribute to the “democratization” of digital currencies"

Wow, haven't heard that one a hundred billion times in Twitch chat. 9_9

I'm disappointed that they didn't explain the Twitch ban during the show, and the fact that they forgot to send the live email notification. It was 20 minutes in before I realized it had started.

Make sure to quote or tag me (@JoostinOnline) or I won't see your response!

The whitepaper publication on Equihash has been posted by somebody (sorry I don't remember the name, but I thanked them) on the thread. I definitely don't understand it but it is cool to see cryptography publications. I will attach the PDF if anyone is interested in. I will also throw in Satoshi Nakamoto's publication on the creation of Bitcoin for anyone that cares to read it. It is easier to read (and shorter) and I actually would recommend that anyone who cares about cryptocurrency at all to take a look.

I'm for WAN branding change. I think HIT would be better. Headlines in Tech. Or Weekly HIT. They would need to do much more professional start where there's actual intro part with Ed or someone else doing voiceover.

The first thing I think of with the term Weekly HIT is actually music in the glory days before everyone had to be autotuned and all sounded the same... I like the NAW show better :P Only when James and Luke are on tho, they seem to flow better with each other vs Luke always waiting for Linus to stop talking...
