Youtube may have additional advertising issues

A BBC Trending investigation has unveiled 1400 videos, accounting for more than 700 million views that has advertising for Edubirdie, which is a Ukranian based service that sells essay writing services.  According to the report, while essay writing services are not illegal, students that submit work they have paid someone else to write may suffer severe penalties.  It is a bit harder for YouTube to monitor for these videos in that they are not ads paid to be played on YouTube directly, but more content creator ad spots contained within videos.  YouTube's response so far has been to say that:

Creators may include paid endorsements as part of their content only if the product or service they are endorsing complies with our advertising policies.

and that:

We will be working with creators going forward so they better understand that in video promotions must not promote dishonest activity.

As for Edubirdie, they state:

We cannot be held responsible for what social influencers say on their channels.
We give influencers total freedom on how they prefer to present the EduBirdie platform to their audience in a way they feel would be most relevant to their viewers.
We do admit that many tend to copy and paste each others' shout-outs with a focus on 'get someone to do your homework for you', but this is their creative choice.

What is really disturbing to me on this is that there appear to be YouTube channels run be minors who are promoting this service and some of the YouTuber's are promoting the service as a way to

free up time to play video games or take drugs.

Of course, the one funny thing is that the BBC ordered two essays through this service, opting for the written from scratch:

One was an English Literature GCSE coursework essay, the other a first-year degree course assignment.
Both were delivered with only the students' names left blank to be filled in.
The GCSE essay was given a C or 4/5 and the university assignment 60% - not quite the guaranteed A+ grade promised by EduBirdie.

 

Still, I find the advertising of these kind of services disturbing and am not really sure on the best way for YouTube to address this as an issue... If YouTube takes a heavy handed approach, they might revise their guidelines to begin banning third party ads within videos as the 'easiest solution'.  My personal preference would be to give these content creators who post videos with these ads a three strike policy, where if they receive three warnings on these kind of ads being within their videos, then they're banned.  I have a feeling that this is a bit more complicated though, considering that, for minors at least, the parents should be paying more attention to what their kids are doing online, especially if they are paying for a service...

I used to offer proofreading and style advice while I was at SCF and USF for a modest fee of $1 per assignment (I did it b/c I had two hours to kill between classes at the time). I had quite a few teachers approvals including the head of the dept. 

 

But this? Writing TWO whole essays and bombing BOTH with average scores!? How the flying sh#t do you pay for that?

I've also offered style advice and proofread several papers for friends in college (usually scientific geology papers) to try and help them get their thoughts in order (huzzah for dyslexia?), however I'm not the one writing it.  It kind of destroys the whole premise of learning material and showing that you've learned it if you pay someone to write the whole essay.

I've written a couple essays before for other students to pay for a grossly overpriced textbook I required (which couldn't be bought used as I needed a code for an online homework thing). Being paid to do the learning was a rather interesting irony in a place where it's usually the other way around. Suffice it to say that I don't think very highly of college.

And here I am, toiling through college :| Anyways, this YouTube issue is gonna hit me in the near future possibly, since I wanted to start monetizing soon. Guess I won't...

I think youtube really has no answer for all this issues at this time: The site at this point it's just too big to manage. You can't expect their algorithms to catch everything and people are always far too clever and find ways around it. There's just so many videos being uploaded it's pretty easy for a creator to go unnoticed, post a video with something shady and we get another one of these 'Youtube allowed this to happen!' stories.

 

It seems to me like the media companies are playing youtube's weakness and their strengths pretty well: Youtube can't control the message, but they can. Advertisers might be initially compelled to be concerned about this and withdraw support from youtube. Even if user content and no curation is the future and they're delaying the inevitable they will delay for as long as old media is even a bit viable but a lot more safe.

 

Overall I would basically say they need to go the other way instead: If youtube is completely hands off in its curation and allows everything on their site they need to also be completely hands off with ads placing and leave all selection matters to the advertisers: We might give you access to stats, tags, etc. But we won't manually show ads anywhere you don't manually select and then you the advertiser is responsible and in full control of where your ads end up.

 

Otherwise the operating costs will continue to just balloon up while advertising support will be lukewarm and make the whole think a money black hole.

people love to complain about youtube's policies and at the same time jump on every single thing that goes wrong there as if YT should be like in a dome or something. YT is part of the internet, the internet is full of people and people mostly are idiots, money loving idiots.

 

I don't even get the title as this has nothing to do with YT advertising, more with it's policies. 

 

And finally BBC should have alerted YT to take down the videos, not milking this, is as much their fault as YT. That's like seeing someone mistreating a child and making a news story instead of alerting the authorities.... see authorities are doing nothing o.O

I'll just add a bit to OP.

YTers got hit a sponsorship chance to sponsor a website that lets you write reports, essay or even course works for a fee. It's essential academia cheating.

I've written reports that took me 3 to 4 days to compile, write and review to hand in. If someone paid 5$ to get a report for nothing an get a degree, then that just pisses me off. No doubt the entire academia community is in arms about it.

I guess it just means he uses Adblock. I never looked up the work homework once in my life and I got the ads. I haven’t been in school for ages so it wasn’t just giving to people who googled homework related searchers. No one in my network would have even searched that
