15 Arrested in connection to PUBG cheating

PUBG developer Bluehole shared that 15 players have been arrested under charges of development and sale of cheating programs, as well as stealing personal information.

Quote

Fifteen people suspected of developing and selling hacking programs affecting PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds have been arrested and fined a combined total of $5.1m, developer Bluehole has announced.

Quote

Local authorities working on the case, translated via Bluehole, said: "15 major suspects including 'OMG', 'FL', '火狐', '须弥' and '炎黄' were arrested for developing hack programs, hosting marketplaces for hack programs, and brokering transactions. Currently the suspects have been fined approximately 30m RNB ($5.1m USD). Other suspects related to this case are still being investigated.

Seems a bit severe. I wonder if these people truly thought that they'd get away with it.

Quote

"Some hack programs that are being distributed through the internet include a Huigezi Trojan horse (Chinese backdoor) virus. It was proven that hack developers used this virus to control users’ PC, scan their data, and extract information illegally.”

Don't download cheat programs from China, kids. Or at all, really.

Bluehole stated in a Steam post that

Quote

We’ve upgraded our security measures, improved our anti-cheat solutions, and recently even added a new anti-cheat solution on top of all that. In the meantime, we’ve also been continuously gathering information on hack developers (and sellers) and have been working extensively with multiple partners and judicial authorities to bring these people to justice.

Good for them.

Bluehole also added that

Quote

We’ll continue to crack down on hacking/cheating programs (and their creators) until our players are free to battle it out in a totally fair environment.

Personally, I'm all for this. People that make these kinds of programs should not get away with it.

Not surprised it happened, but China has been arresting a lot of cheaters, from PUBG to CS:GO. PUBG definitely has an issue, with 99% of banned accounts coming from China. Hopefully, arresting those developing and distributing this software will help. Maybe a couple can be turned and help counter the hacking??

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds' problem with cheaters has been a major issue for the game, and recent data from the company's anti-cheat tech provider, BattlEye indicates that 99% of accounts that have been banned for cheating are from China. Youxi Story reports the statistic, adding that 46% of PUBG's total players are based in China.

This is all well and good, but if this were a large publisher case, I would rather the money "reparations/fines" go to another cause like gaming disorder.

Where did it say they got jail time? All I could see was that they were fined a rather large sum of money.

It would still be easier&better for all PUBG players if there was region locking.

I think jail time is deserved. Stealing information? Sure that merits a hefty fine, but I think some jail time is needed here. Could just be me though.

I think it's more about the culture here. I've seen a lot of Chinese people cheat in many places. When asked about it they just said: "well yeah, was worth the try".

That may be due to the fact that they feel like there is no serious consequences in video games or abroad where their government do not track them as much as well.

I dont think that its okay to arrest them for that, and fine them. Its kindof dumb.

On the small scale... imagine getting fined 10$ and having to sit in the county jail for cheating at monopoly.

Edit: thats not to include the stealing of peoples information...

you are not getting it, they aren't just cheating, they are profiting off this like a real company making a counterfeit product.

China don't care if a kid or adult goes and use a hacking program in game, what they do care is making and selling it for big profits like a market. That's precisely what these people were doing, doing business through illegal means.

To put into perspective of how much they make, PUBG banned over 1.5 million accounts for hacking and still rising, imagine even 200,000 of those accounts were done through this group/company at $10 per deal, that's 2 million dollar in pure profit!

2 million buddy, 2 million?!!!

I guess you didn't read further responses?  Also, good to see where their resources are going over optimizing the game.

I agree, their optimization of the game is shit and i will never stand by their crappy work pace, however, the one pushing for the the arrest isn't Bluehole, it's Tencent in China.

Furthermore, how can a game company go arrest people when they aren't the authority. Not hard to give a update on some news you know. Just like i'm typing this, some employee that's not busy could just write this up at the manager's request during a slow time.

I agree with the jail time as well. If there isn't any sort of serious punishment for hackers, then what is to deter them? And it wouldn't be fair it hackers targeting politicians are held too a higher punitive standard than the rest of them.

(Also, the more you keep changing your profile pic, the harder it is for people to immediately recognize you when scrolling through pages! Haha.)

I think if they got rid of the Lootboxes, it'd definitely help. If you can cheat and win extra points to get boxes, unlock then, and sell the contents for more than the key costs... Well that's easy profit and more than enough incentive to keep cheaters coming. I seriously think getting rid of the ability to sell lootbox contents would be a huge hit to the rate of cheating.

Umm, cool these games should minimize cheaters.

But hey, PlayerUnknown: you do realize that minimizing or eliminating cheaters isn't going to reclaim your lost #1 spot from Fortnite, right?

You do get jail time for distributing malware and profiting over it. This isn't really as much about cheating as it is about maleware and stealing information, this post is misleading ...

its not *really* malware though. It doesnt corrupt other peoples software, doesn't destroy your PC, its something you actively choose to download, etc. Sure, its a shitty thing to do but it shouldn't be illegal.

It's not the cheating that got them jail time. It was distribution. I mean if you are making money off of cheating software you developed for pubg it's kinda expected. Especially if you put viruses into your code.
