Sony RX100 vs Canon G9X Cameras for parents.

Hello everyone,

I am looking for a new camera for my parents. Their old compact camera broke, and they want something better than a smartphone camera to take vacation photo's etc. On the other hand, they want something compact, not a DSLR or System camera. Video is not an important requirement, just still photo quality. They will just use it on Auto settings, point and shoot, perhaps later on with some manual settings.

I was looking at both the Canon G9X MkII and Sony RX100 (first gen). They are both around $450, which one would you get? I know the Sony has way newer models now (Mk II, II, IV, V, etc) , but these are outside of the budget. Don't want to spend more than $450.

Some things I found:

- Canon has newer features such as Wifi, bluetooth, touchscreen, but these are not needed for my parents, on the contrary. Plus I find manual buttons better on a camera anyway.

- Sony has the better lens, F1.8 vs F2.0 and more zoom (3.6x vs 3x)

- Both have a 1" sensor, although the Canon has a newer one potentially (made by Sony though)>

- Sony has significantly better battery life.

- Canon is a bit smaller and lighter, not much.

Leaning towards getting them the Sony RX100, Which one would you get? Is there anything I am missing?

Also open to suggestions for good compact cameras in the same price range. (I think these 2 plus the Lumix range are the only real contenders).

The RX100 is still a fantastic camera. I'd go with that, and perhaps add an aftermarket grip. Especially if they're not a fan of using touch screen controls, since that's a huge aspect of the Canon.
