Questions about AMD Firepro V5900

TArthur99

So I found a $80 OBO Amd fire pro V5900 on Facebook, I am obviously a bit suspicious but none the less I figured I would check a few things.

I have a Z75 pro 3 motherboard, it has PCIE 3.0x16, 2.0x16, and 2.0x1, what port would I put it in? It's a 2.1X16. also, could it be run alongside a 7870? I realize the v5900 is a 3D modelling card, which is what I will be using it for.

I wouldn't buy it...

It's old, it's slow, likely slower then buying a consumer card for that price.

$80 CAD for a V5900? They retail for almost $500 CAD. They are not meant for gaming and I know that. They are specificly for 3D modelling and other memory heavy workloads.

That's a 2011 card.  It's outdated for 3D modeling.

Probably still better for 3D modelling then my 7870 Hawk XD, and it's what I can afford.

It's a seven year old card.

Look into a newer one.

That thing is newer somehow than this card.

this is basically a 6950 but with much less shaders.

Its slower, not supported and really a bad value.

Honestly, you wouldn't be gaining much.  It's horribly slow for the task by today's standards.

Well that's unfortunate. At least I didn't buy it but I thought I found a good deal. And cards you would recommend?

There are two scenarios where a cheap (compared to current professional cards), yet expensive (compared to consumer counterparts) can be useful: when you have a task at hand that benefits from professional GPUs only (due to missing hardware or driver locks in consumer ones), while not requiring too much GPU horsepower in itself, and needing 10bit color output for a 10bit capable monitor, while not wanting to spend too much.

In both cases, you need to double you fit in those cases before pulling the trigger. And when it comes to CAD support, check the specific software to use.

For example, Solidworks can do certain tasks only on Quadros (not sure about FirePros, but it may be only Quadros), so an old used Quadro would be able to accelerate that workload, while a Titan XP would not.

There may be other cases, like double-precision performance, where you would need reliable sources on that particular performance metric, as consumer cards are typically nerfed in that dimension, so you can compare performance per dollar (which may still be worse on the FirePro).

That card is quite weak. My FirePro V7900 actually holds up fairly well. In really heavy poly scenes, my FirePro V7900 handles the scene better than my 980 Ti (UI / selection smoothness wise). Yes, you read that right. Of course in everything else, the 980 Ti crushes it.

However, there's an issue with the old FirePro cards (At least the x900 gen). There's a memory leak in the driver that was never fixed. It causes the Catalyst Pro control center to consume a lot of RAM until you kill the process. I would say to get a newer gen card.
