Intel 9th Gen Cannon Lake + Intel X399

There was a topic here a minute ago about it, and it seems to have disappeared...

Intel document shows there some interesting info about the upcoming Intel 9th generation processors, Cannon Lake. According to their white papers, Cannon Lakes is supported on all Intel 300 series chipsets, except for their Z370. This is unfair for those who owns a board with this chipset as they've paid a premium for it, Looks like Z370 is rushed out instead of taking its time to mature like the rest of their 300 series. On their HEDT platform, it will get both Coffee Lake-E and Cannon Lake-E.

If you want to think about it positively though, you can get an X399 now on either platform. :P

So there'll be two chipsets named the same thing, and even though one has a bigger socket, both support LGA-based CPUs and both will have very similar-looking motherboards available.

Can't wait for the "Why won't my Core i9 work with my X399 motherboard?" posts.

I don't either, but I would be pissed off if my board only supports 1 gen of cpus.

Z370 is in a strange place, because it's fully functional, yet according to that roadmap it would have a shorter lifespan than other 300 series. If confirmed, I'd like what it is that lead Intel to consider a new chipset for the next K chips. It's hard to believe it's pure money grab this time around, but it's also hard to think is about power requirements or whatever they blamed Z270->Z370 on.

On the other hand, X299 was practically DOA, so I could see Intel having no issues with replacing it as soon as possible with a more sensible platform.

Kind of irritating tbh. Like with Z270>Z370 they could change around some of the electrical layouts on the socket and call it good.

X299 suffered from terrible timing. They were doubling down on the "weaknesses" of X99 that could have been profitable to them, but right at a time when they were seeing their performance lead reduced (probably they were more blindsided by Threadripper than by Ryzen, which was more or less expected). I think moving on to X399 could be an opportunity for Intel to regroup, face reality, and come back with more or less an Intel version of  TR4 (I can't use the chipset as a reference anymore :P). After all, they have the fastest core, so it's not a matter of research, but a matter of product design.

However, there are some clouds for Intel in the HEDT side: their monolithic approach makes high core-count chips much more expensive to manufacture. If that continues into CL-X, they have a very fine tuning to make between how much more they can charge because of the per-core advantage vs. how much more it costs to manufacture those. But getting rid of quad-core, dual-channel support, loosening PCIe limitations, etc, should give them a necessary uplift in competitiveness.

Meh, I feel that AMD is going down the right track tbh with multi-die CPUs. Sure Intel could no doubt afford to continue fabbing mammoth monolithic CPU dies, but they'd have to price them in order to make a profit. At that rate, who would be able to afford them? :P

Intel's foundry leadership is starting to wane nowadays, with 7nm development already well underway in fabs such as Samsung, Glofo or IBM. Intel's far superior and hyper optimized 14nm process is IMO one of the biggest factors keeping them on top in terms of per-core performance. But they have to transition sooner or later. Unless Intel expects to stick with 14nm until it becomes something like "14nm++++++++++" while at the same time, everyone else and their dog could be fabbing sub-5nm processes with neat new materials such as GaAs, graphene, or powdered unicorn horns :)

So they think intel is going to change their enthusiast chipset routine? History being told, it should be X499 next and this next gen should be on X299 still. As every other time the platform has lasted for two generations. We shall see I suppose.

Technically X299 is 2 gens, the useless KBL-X and SKL-X. Z370 is only 1 gen Coffee Lake and that's it.

This is a little funky, as Cannonlake isn't actually 9th Gen. That's being held for Icelake. So the PCH (i.e. chipset) has moved to 9th Gen while the CPUs are 8th Gen. xD

Though this does explain the Z390 that's coming, but we knew that already. What we don't know is CPU compatibility, which could get really interesting here in a few months.

Also, X399, haha. This is going to be so damn hilarious.

It's not really much of a departure from the previous nomenclature though. The major difference between AMD now and AMD then is that now the X is at the front.

It also gives AMD a better chance at market penetration amongst DIYers, mindshare is a powerful thing.

It's a pretty large departure. Not to mention the fact that they went from very high numbers to copying Intel exactly. The last chipset was 990FX.

They could have done any number of things to differentiate and still keep it close enough that mindshare still works.

They're simply lazy.

It's a bit funnier than that. X499 with Threadripper on Zen+ should be coming out at the same time.
