Resolution and DPI questions

Hey guys, a bit confused at the moment, and reading google seemed to make it worse, so here goes.

I've got a 1440p 165hz 27" monitor.

 

So firstly, if I play fortnite for example at 1080p I hit the 165frame cap constantly, whereas at 1440p, it averages out at around 135frames or so, so apart from a resolution vs frames point of view, is their any other advantages to either setup.

Secondly, Was looking at the setups of Ninja, Shroud and DrD and all 3 have 25" monitors and all play at 1080p.

 

I don't know exactly how DPI works, but lets say I copy one of their setups, considering I have a slightly bigger monitor, does that mean it'll effect my DPI? https://prosettings.net/fortnite/ninja/

And then assuming I decided to play at 1440p, would that affect my DPI even more?

That first question is relatively subjective and depends on if you prefer the slightly higher refresh rate in return for lower resolution. Assuming you're getting a constant 135 frames per second with few dips, I'd probably take the 1440p 135fps setup personally. Maybe if you were playing CSGO or another competitive game I'd recommend 165hz but fortnite doesn't really need that fluidity and response time.

 

DPI means "dots per inch" or basically how many pixels are squeezed into every inch. So for example a 4k 13" panel on a laptop is SUPER condensed and detailed even if you put your face right up to the monitor whereas a 1080p 50" TV is not so condensed and you can probably start seeing pixels relatively close to the TV. Resolution and size both affect DPI. In this case, your 1440p 27" monitor has a higher DPI than NInja's 1080p 24" (108.79 vs 89.91 respectively). So if you're going for detail and you play relatively close to your monitor (because remember, you can only see so much detail from afar!) then running your game at 1440p is better.

Yes. DPI is dots per inch. So the bigger the monitor at the same resolution, the lower the DPI will be.

Don't base what you get on others. Base it on what you want, and what you feel is best.

Another reason I quite using my 1440 monitor. Been gaming at 1080 for years on the same style mouse with the same dpi.

I can snap to targets with ease, hitscan was incredible. Got on 1440 and its a difficult transition for me. Did on for cod but I had room to spare and the skill gap could cover that.

Just takes timing dialing in the exact difference I needed for the dpi to cover the distance along with being able to increase my fov. All of that was a big factor. I would snap just short of targets, making it very frustrating, ruined about 3 keyboards and 2 mice in the last year from it.

Thank you for the answers. I think I am understanding it slowly.

So my next questions are.

 

On my monitor, if I change my screen res from 1080p to 1440p, all my icons become smaller. Does the same sort of thing happen in games, or will everything stay the same, just a sharper image?

 

Also, I'm not  trying to copy the settings of the streamers exact, but it gives me an idea on what to do (My first every gaming pc and I want to start on the right foot)

So if I play at 1440p, in theory, to copy the settings that Ninja uses for example, if he plays at 800dpi on a 25" 1080p monitor, would me upping my dpi to lets say 850-900 on a 27" 1440p monitor bring similar results? As the DPI of my screen is slightly bigger, upping my mouse DPI should counter this?

 

I'm just trying to cover all basis here. With a 1440p monitor, and new to gaming, I may as well play at 1440p, but I want to be doing the right things and avoid bad habits early on

With resolution increases, scaling of everting changes. Windows has features to fix that. I know 4K people need it. 

 

The games scale correctly if made right. It will effect the fov slot not necessarily the hud and the text and stuff like that.
