Hi,

I'm planning on building a PC for about 1800$. I know it's not the best time to buy a PC but I really need a upgrade. In going to wait for the new graphics cards and probably buy the 1170/2070. The PC is going to be for gaming only. I'm going to play on a 2560x1440 monitor and have two 1920x1080 monitors on each side for browsing. I just want to have your opinion on the build and possible changes.

CPU: Intel - Core i5-8600K 3.6GHz 6-Core Processor  ($237.59 @ SuperBiiz)
CPU Cooler: CRYORIG - H5 Ultimate 76.0 CFM CPU Cooler  ($46.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: MSI - Z370 SLI PLUS ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($104.99 @ Newegg)

An 8700 with B360 or H370 mobo and cheaper cooler is a better choice. Performance is very close, but cheaper.

Last time I checked, Seasonic's 80+ Gold are cheaper as well, and performance is still very good.

Upgrade to an i7 8700K.

It will give you better performance with the extra threads.

You can also go down the AMD route and pick up a Ryzen 7 2700X, with 8 core and 16 threads, for a similiar or cheaper price than the i7.

But if your only gaming, the i7 will outperform the Ryzen 7 in most cases.

Assuming your primary focus is gaming:

Your choice of SSD, RAM and Power Supply are overkill and will barely make a difference at all.

You may as well spend those extra dollars on a 8700k, or save them for the next gen graphics cards

PC Build: R5-1600.  Scythe Mugen 5.  GTX 1060.  120 GB SSD.  1 TB HDD.  FDD Mini C.  8 GB RAM (3000 MHz).  Be Quiet Pure Wings 2.  Capstone-550.  Deepcool 350 RGB.

Peripherals: Qisan Magicforce (80%) w/ Gateron Blues.  Razer Naga Chroma.  Lenovo 24" 1440p IPS.  PS4 Controller.

Audio: Focusrite (Solo, 2nd), SM57, Triton Fethead, AKG c214, Sennheiser HD598's, ATH-M50x, AKG K240, Novation Launchkey

Wishlist: MP S-87, iPad, Yamaha HS5's, more storage

You might consider a 2nd gen Ryzen build. Good performance at a very good price. But if you are settled on Intel, replace the cpu and motherboard in this build with Intel - Core i7-8700 3.2GHz 6-Core Processor and Asus - PRIME B360M-A Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard. (Results in a ~$938 build.)

Instead of an NVMe drive, I would suggest a larger SATA III ssd. More fast storage should result in better overall performance.

Seasonic Focus Plus Gold psu are as quiet as the RMx.

Thanks for considering Seagate. Looks like a fun build. We're around if you have any questions on the hard drive.

Thanks for your feedback!

I'm now considering buying an 8700, but I haven't found a good motherboard yet. My requirements are: 4x4 fan headers, SLI for future upgrades, all black no colours, M.2 slot.

I wouldn't worry too much about SLI. As gpu performance rapidly improves the feature is becoming much less popular.

I'm not aware of any B360 or H370 motherboards that currently support SLI. So meeting your requirements is going to make it quite difficult to meet the budget.

Nzxt is a new player in the motherboard arena so there is little history to go on. NZXT N7-Z37XT-B1 looks to meet your requirements.

Maybe I don't need SLI, bit i would like to have it in black an M.2 slot and 4 fan headers. The motherboard should not be able to overclock, because I'm going for a i7 8700. The motherboard is supposed to be cheaper than a Z370 and still support 8th gen cpu. Or ships I just stick to the Z370?
