Samsung launches new 970 EVO and 970 PRO NVMe SSDs

Samsung has launched their new 970 EVO and 970 PRO NVMe SSDs.

 

Both SSDs use the M.2 form factor and Samsung is claiming 30% faster sequential write speeds.

 

The differences in the 970 Series are mainly due to using Samsung's latest V-NAND technology and using the latest Pheonix controller and a large buffer size.

Designed on the M.2 form factor, both drives are built for gaming and working quickly with intense workloads, such as 4K video editing and 3D design. The 970 Pro, in particular, can reach sequential read speeds of up to 3,500 MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 2,700 MB/s. The Evo can also reach sequential read speeds of up to 3,500 MB/s, but it hits a slightly lower sequential write speed of up to 2,500 MB/s.

The faster speeds, Samsung says, are due in large part to its latest V-NAND technology and new Phoenix controller. The 970 Evo takes advantage of "Intelligent TurboWrite technology," which Samsung says provides a buffer size of up to 78GB in order to deliver faster write speeds. Overall, the increased sequential write speeds represent a 30 percent improvement over Samsung's 960 series.

 

The 970 PRO will be available in 512GB and 1TB capacities starting at $329.99 USD for 500GB. The 970 EVO will be available in 250GB, 500GB, 1TB and 2TB starting at $119.99 USD for 250GB .

damn, and I here I am still using my 5200 rpm hard drive. 

The only reason I'm here is that I have homework that I don't want to do

Yeah, imo the only people buying NVMe SSDs should be content creators and anybody spending over $3K on a system. Cos they're just too expensive for everyone else.

970 evo hardly has any improvement over the 960 evo. It's sad to see that they didn't drop the price at all.

Kingston has a sale on their 128gb ssd and 256gb. Its not fast, but its better than nothing, you can pick it up for 36 dollars for 128gb and about 70 for the 256gb

Samsung doesn't have much competition in the NVMe space other than WD but let's be honest WD is barely keeping up with Samsung.

The 960 Pro got the 2TB special treatment

The new 3D NAND based WD Black is close to the 960 evo and 970 evo but the pros still have no competition, unless you count the much more expensive 900P

The prices of the 960 drives have gone down lately, so not a huge surprise. But as I understand, the read speeds will be somewhat identical to the 960 series?
