EVGA Super Record 2 build facelift Lian-Li PC-08

It is about time that I made a build log. I am currently updating my EVGA SR-2 build and enough is changing that I figured I could turn it into a build log. For anyone who doesn't know, this is a pretty special motherboard. It is a dual socket motherboard that allows me to overclock both xeons. It is a huge motherboard using the HPTX form factor it is 13in (33cm) tall and 15in (38cm) wide, see below for a size chart.

 

The reason I am changing my build is because I was running into cooling issues so this build log will be me changing cases and making a custom water loop to cool it. The loop will include both cpus, the gpu, and the chipset using a custom waterblock. Most of the key parts will remain the same but they will be laid out better and it will look pretty sweet.

 

On a side note, the old build has pictures that were taken with my phone and some of them are really bad, have no fear though I will be using a proper camera to capture the new build.

My previous build had the SR-2 in a NZXT S340 which I modded to be able to fit the huge motherboard.

The specs are as follows:

 

CPU: (x2) Xeon X5690 @ 4.03Ghz 12c/24t

Motherboard: EVGA Super Record 2

RAM: 48Gb (12x4gb) server ddr3

GPU: MSI GTX 1060 Gaming X 6GB

Case: Modded NZXT S340

Storage: Samsung 850 EVO 500Gb and a 2Tb HDD

PSU: XFX 750W PRO Black Edition

Display(s): 24" Acer G246HL

Cooling: Noctua NH-U12DXi4 and a Noctua NH-U9DXi4

Keyboard: Corsair Gaming K70 LUX RGB MX Browns

Mouse: Logitech G600

Headphones: Sennheiser HD558

Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster Audigy FX 5.1 Sound Card with 600 ohm Headphone Amp

Operating System: Windows 10 Pro

 

Cable management was a huge pain in the butt because the motherboard took up so much room and it was impossible to have the cables through the normal spaces used for cable management.

It was a pretty fun build and it worked well aside from cooling. Under load it was pretty normal to see the cpus hit 80 or 90C. The highest I saw it go was 98C one time.

 

My new build will be replacing the all of the cooling systems with waterblocks and it will be in the Lian-Li PC-08 case. It is a beautiful case that I got a deal on and along with this case I will be replacing the fans that it comes with. Instead of the default fans I will be using three Lian-Li Bora RGB fans. I didn't get a great deal on those but they are pretty and I though it would be fitting to keep the Lian-Li theme a little bit. 

 

The PC-08 does not fit the SR-2 without modding. When I did a test fit, the motherboard standoffs were about 2.5mm away from lining of perfectly! I will be making custom standoffs to make it work and along with this mod I also had to saw the front panel enclosure in half and I will probably need to drill big holes in the case to make space for the tubing to fit through.

One person I have to mention right off the bat is @Damascus for putting up with 400+ messages (and counting) of me asking questions and talking about possibilities with this build.

To fill of of my dimm slots I would need sticks that are 10.7gb each and that is inconvenient

Lol no your fine. When it's done I wanna know how windows manages 2 CPUs. If it just looks like more cores and how does gaming work then? Especially on a game like Battlefield 1 where it scales on as many cores as it can get

Task manager sees it as one x5690 with 12c/24t and I'm not sure about the games, I have run lots of games but none that scale with more cores. I will let you know when I get it back together though you may need to remind me

Yes, I currently have 12x4gb. I used to have 64gb (8x8gb) but it didnt populate the slots, it was cheaper to get the 12 sticks of 4 rather than 4 more sticks of 8gb, or rather I would need 5 more because one of mine was dead. I found the 48gb I have for $90 and they all have shiny silver heatsinks though it is hard to see in those pictures

It has 2 CPUs but only 12 RAM slots?! Sad days.

It may be to help with ram Ocing? The x79 version of this board only has 8 slots if I remember correctly

It's because x58 is triple channel.  Double that for 6, double x79's quad channel and you get 8 slots

I have most of the parts now and I am just waiting on a few last items! Hopefully I can get some pictures of it coming together here in the next week or so.

 

You can expect some pictures of the parts of the PC-08 that I have modded as well. The main thing slowing me down right now is I need to make time to go get a drill bit to cut big holes in the aluminum case.

The worst part of case modding is having stuff installed and ready to go and then finding that you need another mod and then having to take everything out of the case again. I am going to be changing the top of the case to have a custom mounting system for one of my radiators once the hole saw arrives in the mail. Pictures to follow

Have you considered opening a hole on the bottom of the case instead?  The ncase uses the same feet as the pc-o8 and these would give enough clearance for an intake or outlet on the bottom

Oh goodness that would be cool too. I don't know if I have the tools needed to open up the bottom of the case to mount the rad. With the top mod I will mainly just need to cut a few holes but on the bottom I would have to cut out a lot more, though I suppose it might be possible to cut some slots using a drill and a dremel.

This is the easy way to make perfect 120mm fan sized cutouts.  If you don't have the piece to attach it to your drill that's an extra $10 or so, but you can get lower quality hole saws that come with one (look around for a bi-metal with smaller teeth)
