Ninja smashes his old Twitch viewership record with his event at Las Vegas peaking at 680'000 viewers.

Disclaimer: By "Record" I mean that "viewership record" I mean for a individual streamer, and NOT a esports event like Overwatch League, CS GO Majors or DOTA 2 events.

Ninja is in the news again for breaking his old streaming record AND raising some cash for a good cause. And it's also putting a massive dent into PUBG's popularity. At the event he gave away $50'000 in cash to lucky winners.

Fortnite god Ninja has already broken a number of Twitch records thanks to his gameplay sessions with Drake, but he didn’t need the music star to break another one.

 

Last night saw a live Vegas event centered around the man himself. At the Luxor Hotel and Casino in the Esports Arena Las Vegas, Ninja played nine games with fans and top Fortnite players alike, doling out $50,000 total in cash and prizes, $2,500 per win, $2,500 for each person that killed him. The result was an intense, often thrilling evening which drew 680,000 concurrent viewers near its conclusion, breaking Ninja’s old Twitch record of 628,000 viewers when he played with Drake.

 

I’ve never really seen anything like this event, part tournament, part meet and greet, part three-ring circus led by Ninja’s star power and his friends Courage and DrLupo in the casting booth. It’s not really “esports” per se, but rather something else entirely, driven solely by Ninja’s immense popularity.

 

While I don't watch that much fortnite and I can't wait for the comments on this thread (omfggggggggggg i wish BR's would die) I'm pretty surprised that a streamer can pull this kind of power and management for a event. While it's not as high production as PGLs, CS:GOs, etc, but it's a great try nonetheless. Pulling in this amount of viewers is a good sign for Fortnite and the esports industry. If one person can pull this kind of viewership off, who knows what a major event can pull off?

 

Oh well, congrats to Tyler for pulling off a entertaining event. (Before you ask, yes it was mostly kids and younger adults but that's what this game is aimed at).

 

His old record with Drake was 628'000 thousand concurrent viewers. GGs fam.

This is gonna be the generational gap between me and my kids I think.. esports and pro gaming.

 

Then again I think it's only partially generational. I have no time for traditional pro sports either...

Depends on the compression and whatnot but if the stream itself is only 2Mbps average then you're looking at just about 1.5 Gigabits of data being sent in total (per second) but multicast would cut down on the amount of bandwidth by a good bit. I send 1 stream to a node and it replicates the stream and blasts it out to anyone listening on a specific address :)

Didn't one of the LoL worlds did 2 million? Twitch is part of Amazon's network, so it can scale to practically the size of the internet at this point.

Right didn't think about that. But it was probably more than 2Mbps if he was streaming 1080p or 60FPS or both.

I doubt this is a generational gap, Linus.  Esports and competitive gaming has been around since before your time, it just wasn't anywhere near as big and popular as now.  You probably simply never noticed it or never cared about it. 

 

Back in the early 00's we were holding Gran Turismo LAN events (GT3 and early GT4 era, so before online was a thing) throughout Europe already.  Smaller events without a real audience, but competitive gaming nonetheless.

Back then we were already looking at the Quake events etc and hoping that racing competitions would become as big, professional and profitable for the participants as all those FPS games were.   

 

Looking back at it, I wish I would have gone the FPS route and tried to turn gaming into a profession, then again I was always more into racing and would have been too old by the time the real money started rolling in.

Cheers to this guy. He must be really really good? I watched him for a couple minutes and couldn’t stand him. If I’m going to watch someone play games instead of watching it myself i’ll watch someone more entertaining.

Pretty cool but i'm not going to play Fortnite. Really doesn't appeal to me - doesn't feel competitive for me. Good for him though.

I think they've seen worst with more than 1 million people watching cs go major finals, or something like 25 millions people for finals of LoL (aren't they broadcasted on twitch like in cs go?). It does seem that esports is more for the generation in between you and your kids. Between 16 and 25 years old mostly I'd guess. Even if we grew up with significantly more connectivity than our parents, we still had a lot of barriers that 10 years old don't have anymore. What effect will it have I wonder?

It's very impressive for individual streamer to gain such numbers that's for sure. Fun and all, cool prizes and some good cause too. 

 

Sometines I find it funny when Linus mentiones he's out of touch with like streamers and eSports cause he's not old per say that he wouldn't cought upon it. :P

Being amongst the first generations growing up with Facebook for instance did change greatly some aspects of our social lives. Sometimes for the better, I personally feel this to be beneficial to stay in touch with friends when everyone is doing their studies abroad or working elsewhere and so on. Sometimes it feels suffocating, as the image you have on social media being ok luv and accessible for all, you know you get sctrutinized more often by companies during recruitment, you know that you have to have the best facade possible if you want to move up the ladder and so on, and the human touch of "oh yeah I know that guy, he's cool/competent/etc."  seems to lack and end up murdering some part of the self esteem of generations who feel they always to compare with everyone else all the time. And that's for a generation which hasn't had the horror to fear as much for invasion of privacy.

The other issue I have with social media, Is because everyone puts on these facades, because we all act like life is always great, we always look great and feel great and what not we are becoming a rather FOMO(fear of missing out), anxious, self-UNconfidence(cant think of the real term) generation, and that's scary as frig. I cant even goo to the swimming baths as I'm scared I will be laughed at. Even though I've lost a shed load of weight. Mine comes from clinical diagnosis of general anxiety disorder, Which is related to a few genetic issues I have. But too think we could be heading to a whole generation of youngsters that feel like me is awful. 

 

Add to the the dire prospects young people have today, especially in regards to home ownership(due to economic reasons) and job stability(due to automation).

I think it also has to do with the "americanization" of society in tandem with social media. We see propaganda of working harder, always harder. If you want to succeed you have to do more and more and more. When you couple that with the fact that most things go through data anyways, it ends up feeling like you have to get a perfect record without any spot anywhere. Because even if everyone has those, not everyone hides those well digitally.

The feeling of being observed and the idolation of people in the spotlight do not help self esteem at all.

 

Ahah yeah stability is a dream for the poor. That's more on capitalism and liberalism than anything else. It greedily converges to a society with two casts: the rich and the poor, with a huuuuuge gap between the two. But changing that is somewhat a bit hard, since the proponent of that ideology still seduce people on the prospect that if you deserve it you will get the good position, which calls on emotions more than anything. Where it does come back is that you do get the fear of missing out on everything, since social media's lead you to believe that everyone is successful in appearance, more so than ever.
