Can I Use AM3 Cooler Mount with MSI Mobo?

Hello I just ordered parts for a new pc build but overlooked the fact that I didn't order the AM4 version of it for use with an AM4 socket mobo. I heard from somewhere that the pre-installed supports on the top and bottom positions of the cpu socket on some motherboards like the MSI B350 Tomahawk I ordered are for mounting an AM3 cooler. Is this true? I wasn't able to find concrete info about this besides this video from Paul's Hardware: If it's true, do I need any extra backplates or mounting hardware?

Yes it is true that some AM4 boards come with plastic brackets on the mounting holes. What mainboard specifically are you trying to use for the build and what cooler?

The plastic retention cage included with AM4 motherboards supports AM3's standard cam-lever arm. Some coolers use this mounting system whereas others don't which won't support AM4.

Here's an example of it at the right:

What cooler did you order?

The M9a doesn't use AM3's standard cam-lever arm. If the cooler doesn't ship with the AM4 mounting hardware, contact Cryorig for an Upgrade Kit. http://www.cryorig.com/getam4.php

Looks like that motherboard comes with all the mounting hardware you'll need for an AM4 socket. You're probably just going to have to replace the backplate and plastic brackets that come with the motherboard which should be easy enough.

Looks like all of Cryorig's coolers now ship with an AM4 upgrade kit, OP shouldn't have to purchase anything.

I have the m9a, which is listed at the bottom as not including the mounting hardware. My cooler box also only has an AMD sticker and not an AMD Ryzen sticker.

My mistake, looks like you'll unfortunately need to buy an upgrade kit.

I also just now realized that my cooler (m9a) is not listed under the drop down menu, and here (http://www.cryorig.com/news.php?id=69) it says that I have to buy the upgrade kit.
