Good air cooler for this build

Donutwithacape

Good day,

As my very first build, I built a PC recently for my girlfriend and picked the i5 8400 CPU that included a stock cooler for budget purposes. I know the 8400 is not going to be the hottest running CPU in the world, especially seeing as though everyone says the stock cooler is fine, but I wonder if I can toss a little extra monies into it to almost guarantee low temps in any program. She's going to be gaming and using Photoshop for the most part; at least, those will be the most resource-intensive items that will be running.

Do you guys think I should throw another (up to) $40 on the air cooling, or will the stock cooler be still great for low temps on the 8400?

Build for reference: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/rjqXvn

Thanks guys!

i don't think that cpu is gonna throttle at it's full turbo, so i suggest stick with the stock cooler

The stock cooler should be enough for cooling already--it wouldn't be included if it wasn't.

If you find that it's too noisy, you can get a quieter cooler. https://pcpartpicker.com/product/hyQRsY/be-quiet-pure-rock-slim-351-cfm-cpu-cooler-bk008

The intel stock cooler is good enough, you don't need to upgrade for any reason other than maybe you want a quieter system.

Personally for a cool $20 I recommend The Cryorig M9i

They're loud and don't dissipate heat too well.

The great benefit of this setup is that you set the fan to blow case air out through the radiator and that heat doesn't get recycled back in which will help all your temps.

I'd strongly prefer to keep it air cooled and under $40.

I understand why u would. I just wanted to make sure that you know this is a maintenance free system. I have had my H100i for 8 years in 3 different CPU's (currently a R5 1600x) The H80 is only slightly bigger than a case fan. with fan that comes with it pointed out back of case above IO area it is about 2.5 inches. extremely easy setup basically plug n play. and you will get a lot better temp than most air. plus corsair customer service is generally very very good if any issue happens. and noise is almost non-existent compared to most air/fin setups.

Did you watch the video? Temps were well in control.

Do you have any personal experience with the stock cooler on the 8400? I've noticed that newer intel cpus tend to be quieter with their stock coolers.

The H80i or H100i are overkill especially when a cooler like the PR Slim does the job while being cheaper and quieter.

If by 'most air/fin setups', you mean prebuilts that don't account for noise, that may hold true. Compared to many aftermarket air cooling solutions, the H80i/H100i aren't as quiet due to the pump noise.

From quietest to loudest, it would be PR Slim < M9i < H7 < 212 Evo < Stock cooler

I've had varying experiences with the stock cooler and how loud it is depends on the case airflow. The Meshify C has pretty good stock thermals so it shouldn't be as bad as some worse-case scenario accounts you can find online. I'd suggest seeing how the stock cooler performs before deciding on whether or not to replace it since most people are fine with it from what I've seen.

212 Evo hasn't been top pick for budget cooler for a long time. Cryorig coolers are better, if they are available and cheaper.

M9i would be the best from those. Cheap, quiet enough, performs well enough. If you need to pick something other than stock, that would be my go-to.
