Howdy,

This garbage showed up on my google now feed. 

"A YouTube video is generating over a million views and myriad social media complaints about Apple "refusing"

to fix an iMac Pro destroyed after taken apart for a video -- but the creators are short on specifics, and profoundly

lacking an understanding of how the system works..." [it goes on and on]

 

It's funny cause how "The system works" is bad, and the entire video was about how bad the system is.

Ignoring the fanboy part since CS forbids fanboy calling, I don't really understand why people are saying Linus was short on specifics. I watched the video and he properly explained the situation. I'm pretty sure they are willfully excluding that info.

I don't want to side one way or the other but if Apple says they won't fix it if you take it apart and then try to get it fixed they blatantly told them

Strictly speaking, Apple has no obligation to offer repair services for accidental damage.  I said in the other thread that they're probably one of few OEMs that offer any sort of official repair option at all, on top of their products being higher quality to begin with.

I have a story, I broke part of a DIMM slot inserting a ram stick at a bad angle and despite having a maxed out EVGA warranty (10 year extended, Saturday Advanced Replacement), they didn't offer anything except $200 plus shipping to send it off and be without for weeks for a repair.  

 

I wasn't expecting them to bend over backwards, but a little bit of "hey we see you're a pretty high roller customer" would have been nice.  I ended up selling the board as-is and buying an Asus one and I think it worked out to being cheaper than taking the repair option.  X99 Classified -> X99 RVE.

EVGA mailed my replacement graphics card the day they received mine, turnaround was like 7-10 days. So no waiting for a repair. 

 

You should have sent it.

I have never wanted to defend Linus more than I do right now. I have never seen any particular need to defend Linus at all before now, actually.

 

Here's an idea, Apple forum folks: How about you buy your products from a company that lets you repair your shit? Jesus Christ, even Gigabyte would still gladly take your money to repair one of their motherboards that you threw off a building then shipped back to them.

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.

If I understood the video correctly, apple wasn't just refusing to fix it. Third party repair joints couldn't even fix it because they order their parts through apple who cant ship the parts because noone is certified yet to fix it.... so in my opinion Linus has every reason to be P.O'd the thing costs $5000..

I don't know what Apple says but under warranty and paying for it too could all be under the same rules. 3rd party would be the way to go but due to the niche market for the imac pro parts are hard to find so you would get stuck like LTT is in right now. They did take it part though still dumb on Apple's part

They are allowed to refuse to repair it themselves, according to their terms of services or whatever while redirecting people toward third party repair centers.

BUT, as Linus said in the video, even if the third parties were were to order the parts, they wouldn't be able to do the repair job on this product because it needs a certification from Apple, that doesn't even exist yet.

Because Apple release a product, demand certifications for the rights to repair them, yet doesn't provide said certification before or right after the launch of said product.

As such, Apple isn't exactly guilt free in this whole thing.

Something costing $5000 better have parts available to have it repaired. The cost of the iMac is comparable to a car and cars must have parts available to fix it, even if they have to be imported.

Under warranty they probably would have replaced it and shipped it off to the states to get fixed.   The hell with your data they don't care one bit about that hope you backed it up...

The reason Apple's market share is small in comparison to "normal" PCs is because Macs all command a sizable premium (minus the Mac Mini), whereas you can go pick up some shitty used pile of ass Acer for 15 bucks and call it a day, or get a 200 dollar shitty laptop... Always prefer component parts and just replacing what's bad.   Watching so many of Louis' videos and Apple wanting $1000+ for something like a blown capacitor or bad trace that costs labor and 25 cents to fix
