Are LAN parties still a thing?

cflanders

As the title suggests, are LAN parties still a thing? I know at big conventions and such, but do many people get together over LAN or play games or has everyone pretty much moved to online gameplay?

Edit: Thought about it some more and it brings up the question of how to carry your computer to another house and have power supplied and everything. Or do you have more than 2 sets of plugs in each room?

Hell, I'm going to one this weekend with a few friends, so I'd say they're a thing.

Granted it ends up being less of a LAN party and more of just generally hanging out, but still.

Absolutely. My buddies and I just had a 10 player Ark LAN a month or so ago. We're looking at trying to do another one as well.

Just now, ZcanKal said:

The name is technically still LAN party, but it's usually online even when they're at your house.

Yes, technology has definitely helped a lot. Especially if some people can't make it, they can still hang out remotely if there game is online or playing of an online server.

You can still invite people over to play and it's a great experience, but It's getting less and less common on PC,other than Nintendo consoles most pepole would prefer to play online and not bother with transporting a PC

I've done 3 player lans recently at my place with my wife and bro-in-law.  And I've done other smalls scale console and PC lans with friends in the past.  I think my biggest was around 8 - 10 players playing Halo 2.

While online gaming is still fun, actually getting everyone together in a social environment is a lot more fun.

There is a group of us that try to do it 4 times a year. We have anywhere from 7 to 15 people.

They are, but with the introduction of ad-hoc matchmaking in games, and the fact that internet speeds are significantly better than back in the heyday of LAN parties, they're just not as common. Why lug all your stuff over to one person's house when you can all just party up on whatever game you're playing and talk through voicechat? Not that i'm saying they're bad, I love them. I just recently had one with 2 of my buddies where they brought their PCs/PS4s over and we all played a bunch of Fortnite and shit.

I think they haven't gone away. They are actually easier to arrange now when gaming laptops are a thing and  decent internet connection plus 4-port routers are common. Plus, its like having friends over to play on consoles. Except you do it over weekend and have more variety on activities.

I haven't been at smaller LANs (my brother has, both with desktop and laptop). I have been few times and major local LAN (Assembly) with desktop and once with laptop. Lately my work has prevented attendance so I've been only following events from streams and social media.
