they aren't the same, That would make there non pro range interchangeable and that just breaks apples one rule to rule them all. MAKE IT PROPRIETARY, MAKE IT ALL PROPRIEATRY

Well, in the worst case scenario they can try to convert the older ones cable to newer ones. Here's a picture of the old one.

why the hell would it?

You should be able to get repair for something like that. For example if you broke gearbox on month old car and they said sorry buy new one. Wood it be OK?

In fact US or EU (I'm not sure) considered some laws forcing manufacturers to offer repair or spare parts and providing third parties with repair manuals.

BTW. Except for customer protection it's really bad for environment.

You can source the parts from China. You can post what you are needed for your iMac. There are tons of suppliers there that can help you source the parts needed for the iMac.

Pretty much what has already been said, find and contact the factory/guy who build it for Apple, ask some help from the guy at 'Strange Parts' youtube channel, find a nice guy who works or knows very well apple hard/software to make the new screen accepted by your current broken imac. It's a crazy story i hope it will become big, apple fucked up big time again, but we still love them, pfff

This thread is so saturated. Some poor smuck has to read through this in order to hopefully get that mac fixed.

I second the idea to splice the wires from a different display. I replaced a iphone 4 screen with the wrong model, i had to modify the case a bit.

Its scary, but it turned out fine. Id try the DIY part route.

Software wont refuse the screen, neither do hardware. AASP diagnostics will show that its not the right screen but thats it

Just get a display shipped from their manufacturing plant in China.  Not like they can keep anything in there anyways.

Actually IIRC iMac 2015 5K screen and the iMac Pro screen has same connectors, only different locations on mobo

EDIT: Thanks @perrycucko https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iMac+Pro+Teardown/101807#s191240

It is the same connectors, only their wire length and place on mobo is different

Hi, i'm from germany and i found some online stores with parts for imacs. You could look around there and see if you find something that fits. Here are a few links: http://www.macplus24.de/mac-ersatzteile/imac.html

https://www.cdx.de/store/index.php?language=de&host=www.cdx.de&cPath=179&tpl=mobile

(Here some translation: "Netzteil" means "PSU" and "Bildschirm" means "Screen")

This makes an interesting video Serie!

If the fixing does not work, you simply MUST build a whole new LinusTechtips Mac! That would also be awesome!

I'm an ACMT working for CityMac in Bellingham, WA (right across the border from you).

We are an AASP, can get the parts you're looking for and would be glad to repair the iMac for you.

I personally have the required certification to repair the iMac Pro.

Let us know!

Not even heatsink. All the difference is in the 2 connectors (data and power). Its possible with the old wires (theres enough slack for it), so might not need any resoldering...

Best chance you have is going to Shenzhen in China and looking for the parts in the markets there.

There is a Youtube channel called Strange Parts who made his own iPhone there and claimed you could get pretty much anything.

That's all I can think of

Good luck

Sam

You could also buy another Mac. But use the damaged one as parts for the new one.

Hey guys, so the video is up and we're turning to you. Apple can't help us, AASPs aren't really getting the parts, either - What can we do? Let us know!

Have you tried Ifixit ?

Regarding the screen I would guess it's not the actual panel which is broken but only the glass infront of it:
The metal on the back of a lcd panel (which shorted out the power supply?) is in most cases not even used as a ground for the electronics but only a physical protection for the panel itself.
You can maybe get a replacement for the glass (often in combination with a shittier screen) from a Chinese vendor, as you can get that easily for Iphones and macbooks.

For the power supply a bit of solder and a steady hand could also be enough.
You can torture a modern power supply a lot before it is completely useless so hopefully just a blown fuse which needs to be replaced.
As long as a integrated chip/micro controller isn't completely fried.
Just check the board with a reference picture for any abnormalities and then check for conductivity/capacity/inductance with a multimeter.

If the power supply is a separate circuit board you may be also able to get one second hand from a Chinese vendor.

But as this is Apple they may have added steps to brick the whole system if anything is wrong with the power delivery.

There is this place called iSmash in the UK which specialise in this kind of thing and although they do not have the iMac Pro on their site, you can contact them and see if they are able to find parts and replace the screen. The only issue is shipping to the UK. Here's a link: https://www.ismash.com/pages/mac-macbook-repairs

@GabenJr

From what I read until now this is the situation:

  • PSU - replaced and assumed to be working
  • Logic Board - might be grilled - cannot be tested due to:
  • Screen - broken and confirmed not working

As you have Thunderbold ports, you could verify if the logic board is working by plugging in an external GPU and connect an external screen to it.

The external GPU should force MacOS to switch the output to the external monitor. If this would work, directly connecting a screen via thunderbold should work as well.

Not sure if you have already tried that (most probably you did that already).
