New neuroprothstesis can listen in to what you hear.

lavablade02

This Seeker article tells about a neuroprostesis that listens in on brainwaves and decodes them.

Quote

Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco have developed a neuroprosthesis that monitors brain activity and recognizes when a person hears a particular phrase or sentence. By analyzing the brainwaves generated by speech sounds, the system identifies the words the person is hearing.

What that means is it decodes brain signals when it hears spoken words.

Quote

the ultimate goal of the research is to develop an external neuroprosthetic device that could help people “think out loud.”

Quote

“The system and results we present in this paper really reflect an initial and important step toward a speech neuroprosthetic device,” he said. “Ultimately, we think that a successful speech neuroprosthetic should be capable of processing neural signals in real-time, [translating] either perceived or produced speech and brain activity.”

The article goes on to talk that the device has gotten serious press attention for the wrong reason. People think it is a mind reading device, where is really is to help people communicate who have conditions such as locked-in syndrome.

Quote

It's unclear if a system like the one we designed will ever be very useful for reading thoughts — if that is ever even possible.”

This is why I don't go outside anymore, I'm scared someone will decode my thought lol.

but seriously if this helps people who cannot talk and stuff that would be very cool and helpful

Sweet! A couple more important advancements in bio-engineering and we're ready to join the Collective! Although I fear we may quickly run out of biologically distinct subjects to assimilate.

ah, ive always wanted this thing, talking is too tiresome

Imagine a chatroom based on this thing, while it will be pure cancer coz people are cancer, its unimagineably cool at what insane speed and precision you would be able to exchange thoughts

and when this things gets to proper maturity it might be even able to make your vague thoughts precise, as in extrapolate from that feeling that you know exactly what you want to convey but just cant find the words.

On the other hand, if its ever able to interact with brain properly, with real read/write - hello mindcontrol, finally we wont need all that pesky mass media to tell us what to think, just upload it into brain directly. But the possibilities to use it for accelerated learning, god damn, i might signoff my free will for being able to upload some advanced knowledge into the head directly, oldschool learning is annoying

I see useful aspects to technology like this, however for some "unknown' reason the Dream Police is playing on loop in my head while I look at this topic...........its very concerning.

Psycho Pass is playing for me. I don't see a problem with this so long as they don't interfere without consent (for medical or psychiatric help only) and they don't send signals back (brain washing).

Those two things aren't mutually exclusive.

However, in this case we are talking about "listening" what you hear, so it's not some sort of "thought spying" device. I'm pretty sure there are very simple ways to hear the same as you without any brainwave scanning machinery :P

What if the criminal justice system uses this?

Or government enforcing social norms.

This is getting spooki. If I am capable of coming up with such an idea that is unconventional, who is to say they aren't too?

Careful not to be painted black. ;)

Anyways, I think this is the tech that is required for bridging the gap between being able to control prosthetics with your brain (a few already exist and are in testing) and receiving neural feedback from those prosthetics. Effectively a major step towards human augmentation.

This is pretty neat. I've seen a less impressive version of this last year at a conference/hackathon I went to. As for being concerned that now people can read your thoughts, unless they force you to put on an EEG cap they can't read your thoughts and it's likely we'll always need some kind of head mounted tech to detect really minor electrical impulses.

Besides even if they stick you in an EEG you could probably feed it fake data securing your thoughts. ie mentally play pazaak like Atton.
