Best privacy oriented phone?

Afternoon all -

 

Recently in the light of the facebook data fiasco I have become obsessively privacy oriented, switching my search engine to duckduckgo, removing all social media and even downloading tv shows and movies locally to avoid prying eyes. (My chromebook is now running Linux Mint with Tor and I have duct tape over the webcam) The one thing missing from my privacy is a non google android... I have an LG G5. What kind of phone is there, if any, that focuses entirely on keeping your stuff to yourself? (A dumbphone is also welcome as a suggestion)

 

I also had a thought that I could just root my phone but I don't know if that would do anything.

I wouldn't use Tor anymore and you don't need to go so far to be "private" you will never be private on planet earth btw. Also all your social media still exists even after you delete it. I would just use a VPN, encrypted DNS, duckduckgo, and an iPhone honestly.

rooting google out of your android phone is definetely possible but its very time consuming unless you know what you're doing

 

another idea which you could do your homework on is the very old, long unsuported firefox OS which had a very short life span to my knowledge, i doubt anyone will crackdown the doors on such an outdated OS (idk for sure, i just found it and found it interesting as a fan of firefox they even did this at all)

there was a kickstarter for a phone like this it got funded but you know how kiskstarters go still hasn't shipped as far as I am aware.

You could also look into installing custom android roms for you phone.  Something that doesn't have to google stuff pre installed.

 

But with a cell phone you can never be totally private because your carrier can still track your location via the cell towers even with a "dumb" phone.

Nodes can be run by anyone and could potentially see what you are doing. Also a lot are run by the FBI which assume you are using it for illegal reasons only. Plus it’s slow and not needed for your use case

Yeah you'll never be 100% private but these are all good steps to take to take control of your data.  I would also recommend ProtonMail for email I've been using it for the past couple of months and they even have Android and iOS apps.  There are free and paid versions.  They also offer a seperate Proton VPN service as well.

 

Remember the ultimate security vulnerability is thinking that you are completely secure.
