Can a Founder's edition Card be made to run like a 3rd party?

I wanna know if I can tweak a Founder's edition 1080 TI to perform like a Asus strix or EVGA card. Prices are crazy and I am water cooling anyway can I make it run close the the 2.1 GHz range?

wether  u have a FE or a STRIX

 

the amount of oc is dependant on ur chips binning quality,   the better its binned the higher it cna go...  some strix cards might not make 2ghz some make 2,2 ...  but the same for FE... the only limit in FE is temperature and sound, however 1xxx series cards are pretty cool so not too much worried about temps

 

just keep in mind a FE card at 100% fanspeed will sound like a jet engine

what? the cards are all the identical same, they all carry inside the very same processing chip, since you want to water cool the Founders Edition is actually the best option for its cheaper price and the fact it uses a stock PCB which makes finding water blocks or AiO's so much more easier.

I would say it depends on:

  1. Silicon Lottery. Some cards may be able to get farther than others.
  2. VRM quality. Aftermarket higher end cards tend to have better VRMs which allows for higher stability.
  3. Power. Your PSU must be able to supply enough power to the GPU and everything else in your system.

The last thing isn't usually a big deal, but the first 2 are.

You can make it run like a stock AIB card easily, as all the stock clocks from AIB cards are easily reachable on a FE.

Whether you can hit 2.1ghz or not is pretty much luck of the draw, some FE's can hit it, some can't, some AIB cards can hit it, some can;t.

Not really it is a lot better on Pascal, I had the TITAN X Maxwell and yes that card did force the FE cooler into a jet sound but the 1080 Ti even on full load usage has a rather decently smaller sound issue.

 

Then again since OP wants to water cool it is a no brainer that the FE makes more sense.

Yes, I got FE cards with watercooling installed too (2 x 1080 Ti).

They run at around 2 GHz, haven't tried to go higher but should be possible since they run at ~ 50°C at full load.

I think aftermarket cards are unnecessary if you watercool them anyway (except the Asus Poseidon maybe ^^).

unless hes an real enthusiast about getting that extra 50mhz . id say FE makes more sense too... usually the better vrms / pcbs will only give an average of +50mhz ( if it would be the exact same binned chip in there ;v )

You could max out the chip by adding another 25mhz, all comes down to silicon lottery.

Temperatures are still the number 1 factor for Pascal given how GPU 3.0 works, then again the difference on a 1080 Ti is only apparent past the 1950~mhz and even at 1950mhz this card already is capable of whatever ultra gaming you want.

yeah fe is just fine, but if u compare the exact same binned chip on a custom pcb u can get that extra 50mhz because of power limit draw increase x_x ( not coz the chip can clock higher )

however if u have a custom bios on the FE vs custom bios on custom card, i guess the result is the same, but i do think on a custom pcb+vrm they allow a tad bit more power draw by default

 

then again, 50mhz would be nothing u wouldnt notice it. so not work a custom pcb for that even if u manage to squeeze that 50mhz on a good binned chip
