Sapphire's Vega Nano

So not too much is known about the card as of right now, but I suppose we might be getting a miniature thermonuclear bomb.

Spoiler

Quote

Over at Reddit, a user posted an image of a naked Radeon RX Vega built by Sapphire, a longtime partner of AMD. With the heastink and cooling assembly stripped away, we get a pretty clear view of the GPU nestled into the comparatively tiny printed circuit board (PCB). According to the post, what you see above is the PCB that Sapphire is using for its Radeon RX Vega 56 Pulse graphics card.

I'm just a little confused about that VRM sectioning though, I think they got phase 3 and 4 mixed up, and it should be that phase 4 should be the bottom inductor, leading to a 6+1+1 arrangement around, for core + something + HBM2.

eh, gigabyte has some MITX 1070s and 1080s that actually cool pretty well and are tiny as hell, not sure if i'd pick heat-monster vega over those tbh.

Eh, I was super excited many, many months ago when they teased it. Then u saw the pricing of Vega and I became a lot less interested. Then I saw the performance and lost even more interest. Now I've pretty much given up on AMDs GPUs and don't even follow news about them.

Totally agree. If it were cheaper, it'd be a great card for their who want to leverage Freesync monitors. But at the price it'll  likely be, it's too premium and you might as well fork over a little more for NVidia.

As stated, this is the Sapphire Pulse card:

0abe78e7-d577-46b0-a86c-74eaed31651a.jpg

I love this design for two reasons:

  1. The back fan has a completely unobstructed heatsink, which means the air will be blown straight through it, just like a CPU tower cooler. Sapphire proved this is much more effective when they first introduced it on the original Fury card. So better temps, lower noise.
  2. Buildzoid claims the L shaped VRM layou[]t is the most efficient you can do on such a card:

I do wonder if we are going to get a Nano card? I don't really see any reason for it, as thermals would be an issue. As all Vega cards are being sold anyways (most to Apple, I guess). And that most ITX cases for gamers support full size GPU's anyways.

IMO they shouldnt, someone needs to make an ITX case that really pushes more than the CPU heatsink size down

Why? You won't get a whole lot of performance out of such a tiny cooler anyways. A small PCB card with a CLC attached, would just be stupid expensive (remember FuryX?). Cases like Dancase C4 and Ncase M1 supports CPU CLC and a full sized GPU. That makes sense, and makes it possible for a full high performance gaming/workstation rig.

id rather see the size pushed to its extremes tbh, no storage places and just M.2 and sfx GPUs and tiny coolers is at least to me much more fun

The Dancase C4 will be under 10 liter. How small you want them? Dan's A4 is under 8 liter. If you want it smaller, get the NUC with Kaby Lake G.

But you can't with standardized hardware pieces. Either you would not have room for the PSU, or you'd had to scrap the GPU. Even if you made the A4 smaller to suit a nano, the only thing you would get, is turning the PSU sideways, which might give you, maybe ½-1 liter less size.

I think what you really want is the Kaby Lake G NUC, with ram upgrades and SSD upgrades. Doesn't get smaller than that with that amount of power.

yah you can, you can fit a hallf heigh GPU + SFX PSU(7.4cm + 10cm) ontop of eachother and be just over the height of an ITX board, thats one of the extreme solutions i can see, or you lay the backplate of the ITX board lenght GPU on the SFX PSU and just make a sandwitch that goes mobo - PSU(+ potentially cables and storage, or the CPU heatsink) - GPU. i dont know enough CAD to go design such a thing, and it wouldnt be nice to build in but you can make some small stuff without needing to go for a power brick

yah you can, you can fit a hallf heigh GPU + SFX PSU(7.4cm + 10cm) ontop of eachother and be just over the height of an ITX board, thats one of the extreme solutions i can see, or you lay the backplate of the ITX board lenght GPU on the SFX PSU and just make a sandwitch that goes mobo - PSU(+ potentially cables and storage, or the CPU heatsink) - GPU. i dont know enough CAD to go design such a thing, and it wouldnt be nice to build in but you can make some small stuff without needing to go for a power brick

A Kaby Lake G part, heck even the new Ryzen APU's are much more powerful than any half height card though. I still don't see the point in such a build. It's so limited in what parts you can use, and the performance with that thermal envelope, it's really nonsensical to me.

Watching Intel have competition is like watching a headless chicken trying to get out of a mine field
