9th BOINC Pentathlon hosted by SETI.Germany

Just been looking at the stats, think we should have a comfortable 18th position win on swimming. Who's currently crunching what, I'm going to be transitioning to Rosetta and asteroid. We're doing really well in the marathon and were slowly gaining on those around us. Good going little(and big) CPUs!

I'm good on RAM as I like to have backups on parts.  I'm very glad I stocked up before the prices shot up.  The prices are nutty right now.  I would love to bump the 1950X to 64GB of RAM, but no way I'm paying the current prices.

That's the plan I start with... but it soon gets to the point where I can build another system with minimal extra purchases, and I have one more system and no spares again.

There's a 3000 Corsair RGB 64GB kit (8x8) that is catching my eye at the moment as price-per-gig is way lower than anything else around. Keep thinking I could sell some crypto and get it that way, but never quite got around to it.

Main system: i9-7980XE, Asus X299 TUF mark 2, Noctua D15, Corsair Vengeance Pro 3200 3x 16GB 2R, RTX 3070, NZXT E850, GameMax Abyss, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, Acer Predator XB241YU 24" 1440p 144Hz G-Sync + HP LP2475w 24" 1200p 60Hz wide gamut

Just got home and apparently both my PC and laptop had rebooted at some point, lost some ground as folding at home was running alongside BOINC slowing everything down.

I bagged 16gb 4x4 for £86 brand new. 2666mhz adata xpg. I'm happy with my purchase.

Other projects have been added btw, you can throw your CUDA cards on asteroid@home in 3 days (or you can start bunkering now). Also Rosetta(sprint) should be starting in a day or so a day before universe(swimming) ends.

Currently a mix of numberfields and universe, with some shift to the first for now. Tomorrow night around this time I'll switch everything over to rosetta. I don't do bunkering, so run pretty much real time. Obviously will aim to move to asteroids when the time comes.

Windows Updates just hit. One system rebooted/idle for best part of a day, but fortunately the bulk were pending restart which I did manually.

Keep the stuff you have on marathon the way it is as we're doing well there. And it was around 2 months ago or so late Feb or early march.

Switched my laptop over to bunker asteroids as it's my only system with CUDA.

I do note the following statement in rules:

Quote

Asteroids@home is listed as a CPU project because, in contrast to other GPU projects, a GPU is barely more powerful than a CPU.

On the assumption that statement is generally true, I'll probably run a lot more CPUs and not GPUs due to power efficiency. If anyone has more specific data to show relative performance between them I could add GPUs.

Hmm... I think I'm going to switch out my GPUS from F@H to asteroid as I have all 24 x86 threads I have currently working on BOINC.

Be careful buying outside the TR4's motherboard's memory QVL list for 8x DIMMs unless you know someone else got the same hardware combo working. The list of 8x options on my MB's QVL list was tiny compared to the 4x offerings, and I got bitten by buying off-list (only being able to install 4x of the 8x Corsair 3000 DIMMs I brought).

As mentioned previously I have zero interest in TR anything as they're the wrong tool for my interests. If I got the 64GB kit, I would only use it together on either X299 or possibly X99 systems for a y-cruncher benchmark on hwbot, where basically if you're not running 64GB of ram you're going to score so badly due to swap it isn't worth thinking about. After that, I'll split it around my systems. Currently I'm short 4 sticks if I want to get all my DDR4 era systems running at full channel capacity, which I do need otherwise I'm bandwidth crippled. Any excess sticks would allow dual rank per channel running for a slight performance boost to target systems.

That an issue at times for sure.  I need another backup PSU since I'm using it on the new 1950X build.

Ugh, my grammar issues....stupid brain keeps putting wrong words down at times.

Yeah, Astroids GPU app is still rough, but I know many other crunchers are using GPUs so they can keep the CPUs busy on the other projects.

Interestingly enough, I never bother reading QVLs.  :P   I just made sure I have B-die Sammy sticks.

It's a 1060 MaxQ....  So not quite a real 1060...

So, looks like I'm going to be down to the 1500X and i5 7300HQ for a couple days. What should I focus them on?

What CPU though? Even assuming only quad core, that's 4 units in 2 hours, or one every 30 mins on average.

Ooh, just saw the cross county event will be PrimeGrid. GPUs on standby! PPS-sieve sub-project on GPU is relatively high credits-per-time so will probably be the focus for most. Possibly so much faster it doesn't make much sense to run anything else. CPUs might be best put on other events. You will want to check the project selection and other settings as appropriate. I think it is default for new joiners, but if you joined in the distant past other sub-projects may be selected.

If you only run BOINC the following doesn't matter, but they are implementing anti-bunkering on PSA. If you don't know what it is, don't worry about it.

Nah - its a compat issue. Error details:

CUDA RC12!!!!!!!!!!

CUDA Device number: 0

CUDA Device: TITAN V

Compute capability: 7.0

Multiprocessors: 80 Unsupported CC detected (CC2.0 and better supported only).

Each nVidia cuda card has a compute capability number (expand the Cuda Enabled GeForce Products area) and the Titan V is the first with CC7.0, ie, the 10 series are all CC6.1 cards. Asteroids@Home doesn't realise CC7.0 exists yet and gives the "compute capability 2.0 or better supported only" message.

I'd post this on their forum but I can't post there without some unspecified number of project credit, and who knows if I will ever reach that unspecified threshhold trying to limp along on CPU work units. Catch 22.

Edit: I forgot I have an old crapbox with a 1050ti in it. Will see if I can work up enough credit to post the issue on their forums.

Do Titan Vs work with PrimeGrid?

I'm currently moving into stockpiling marathon(numberfields) and cityrun(PrimeGrid) work units. Who's currently looking to move into rosetta and asteroid after swimming ends?

20 threads on Marathon and 4 on City with 4GPUs to help out on primegrid.

Do Titan Vs work with PrimeGrid?

Yes. 4 concurrent work units per card seems to be the sweet spot for both the Titan V and the Vega 64's.Testing suggests Kuroneko and Chibineko will be able to spit out 2.5 PPS-sieve work units per minute between them, not counting CPU chump change.

At 24 hours before PrimeGrid start time I will stop other events as the CPU only projects like to cannibalise CPU capacity from GPU work units and stop them running.

Coupla hints in the spoiler below, but you guys will likely know this stuff already.

Spoiler

- Suggested app_config.xml to use as a starting point attached to this post if anyone else wants to run multiple GPU work units through each cards, as per the instructions HERE.

- As porina mentioned mentioned, make sure to just select the "PPS-sieve (Proth Prime Search Sieve (PPS-Sieve)" sub project in the Edit Primegrid preferences as they are overpowered for credit awarded compared to other sub projects.

I'm currently putting a little fuel into numberfields, and will switch CPUs to rosetta later this evening. GPU will remain idle until PrimeGrid event is online. I hate being thermally limited...

Also, see below from a PrimeGrid admin:

For those of you wishing to "bunker" more tasks in advance of the PrimeGrid portion of the Pentathlon, I have increased the number of tasks each computer can receive ten-fold, from 100 tasks per GPU to 1000 tasks per GPU. Have fun!

Above applies to boinc. My earlier comment on PSA remains.

For my three gpus would they bet better put to work on primegrid or on astroids I don't mind having to put in the work to optimize for either one but wont be able to have access to my computers to change them out after they are all nvidia so its just a matter of what the better strategy is.
