Intel Z390 motherboards and Intel I7-9700K 8-cores

Intel Ice lake i7-9700k could come next year and new Z390 motherboard should be compatible with i7-9700K but also with i7-8700K :)

Those screencaps are rather old news, though the 8c Coffee Lake part does seem like it's going to happen, as we keep getting persistent rumors of it out of Taiwan. We're still not sure what the point of it is.

Because Intel has a pathological need to be able to market that they have the max number of cores in any given x64 market.

Hopefully 6 core desktop is gonna be mainstream by then. 4 core 8/4 thread in i3/r3 and 6 core 12 thread i5/r5. Hopefully its the end of dual cores

What I'd like to see on a soon generation (like 400 series chipsets):

  • Celeron = 4c,4t
  • Pentium = 4c,8t
  • Core i3 = 6c,12t
  • Core i5 = 8c,16t
  • Core i7 = 12c,24t (mainstream, not HEDT.)

And when DDR5 is out, I'd like the entire stack, from Celeron-T to Xeon Titanium Platinum, to use the same socket, AND be forward compatible for the lifetime of DDR5.  (For example if you got a board + Celeron in 2021, you could upgrade to a Core i9 / Xeon Platinum / Threadripper / EPYC released in 2028 or later, and other intermediate upgrades, without needing a BIOS update.)

 

Also I want DDR5 to BE ECC across the board. (The user could turn it off to enable a higher overclock if they desire.)  Also it should support at least 1 TB on 4-slot boards before considering RDIMMs/LRDIMMs (which should be supported on all boards / chipsets / CPUs).

 

My 4790K+Z97 desktop supports 32GB DDR3 (8GB/DIMM, and my 6700K+Z170 laptop supports 64GB DDR4 (16GB/DIMM).  The Core 2 Duo laptop I was using before that has 2GB DDR2 (1GB/DIMM). I also had an Athlon 64 X2 4000+ on 690G IIRC, with 4x 1GB DDR2, but only 3GB was usable by the OS.

 

So... in my case, DDR3 supported 8x the capacity per DIMM vs DDR2, or 16X the capacity per system rounding to powers of 2.  DDR4 should have supported 8X per UDIMM (64GB) what DDR3 did, but it didn't.  I think DDR5 needs to make up for that shortcoming, supporting 64X (8^2) what DDR3 did, or 512GB/UDIMM. :)

 

Actually I'd like to see motherboards be forward compatible enough (able to use future newer / faster / higher-capacity CPUs, RAM, storage, etc. so you wouldn't need a new board (or even a BIOS update) until we've hit the 16-exbibyte (18.45 exabyte) 64-bit RAM limit (per physical RAM unit) AND the 8-zebibyte (9.44-zettabyte) GPT volume size limit. :)

It certainly gonna make a hell lot of HEDT processors obsolete for all those people who could use the the CPU horse power without needing a bunch of pci-e lanes.

 

Hopefully this i7 9700k will feature more than just 16 lanes and maybe more than 64gb of ram if it does then HEDT will be pretty much dead much the same way Ryzen 7 1700x made the i7 6900k irrelevant when it costed 3 to 4 times more for about the same performance.

I don't really think it's a good idea to add more CPU lanes to just one of the CPU's on a platform stack. We will see exactly what we saw with X299, where specific CPU's cannot use half of the DIMM slots or M.2 slots on the board because the way the board is wired, the CPU won't have enough lanes or IMC's. If they are going to increase the lanes, or add additional memory controllers, it has to be done across the entire product stack, or it's only going to obfuscate the entire platform as a whole.

 

I don't really think they need to add additional IMC's for quad channel, as 99% of most consumers wouldn't see a benefit from doing so, and those that do can already invest in the HEDT platform if they absolutely need the bandwidth. Most consumers would benefit from lower latency, and fewer memory channels tends to equate to lower latency in general. 

 

The PCIe lanes is a touchy subject, mostly because multi-GPU setups seems to be going the way of the dodo given the "death" of triple/quad SLI, and scarcity of GPU's on the market, but more and more people are investing in SSD's, so I can certainly understand it from a storage perspective. I think with X299's much larger PCIe lane count, Intel certainly has room to give the consumer platforms a little extra. I think 24 coming from the CPU itself would be a nice number, as it would still allow people to run their 2 way SLI/CF setups while also letting them RAID their NVMe drives without going through the chipset. However, it needs to be done across the entire stack, so that people are not confused as to why specific ports on their boards are not functional with their Pentiums/Celerons.

This isn't really a new issue when intel is forced into a re-release to improve scenario via an issue or competition this tends to happen look at the number of haswell boards for example. They clearly didn't intend to release an 8 core or even 6 core chip prior to ryzen and this is what they scrapped together currently.

 

For instance on LGA1150 they have the following chipsets, B85, H81, H97, Z87, Z97, Q87, and C226 (the last one is a workstation/ server model)
