Don't forget that language is made by those who speak it, and that context is key. In the correct context, you can understand they as being plural, though I agree it's not the most elegant solution to the "Unknown gender on the Internet" problem.

Dolphins have been shown looking themselves in the mirror and recognizing that they're there, that it's them, and examining themselves for markings that were put in them, according to the documentary I watched.

 

Elephants create art, like music, can have very deep emotional bonds and have a couple other things that suggest that they are indeed sentient.

I think that was @Tog Driverwho said that initially, lol.

 

As for gendered pronouns, I just don't really use them in face-to-face conversations anymore.

However, on this forum, I do tend to assume people are dudes: I actually did the same thing to 'chew like 6 months ago?

Just apologize if you are incorrect, and move on. That's the safest practice in my experience.

I think there’s a difference between “intelligent animal” and sentient, but to each their own I guess?
