Facebook's Zuckerberg fires back at Apple's Tim Cook

Facebook's chief executive has defended his leadership following criticism from his counterpart at Apple.

 

Mark Zuckerberg said it was "extremely glib" to suggest that because the public did not pay to use Facebook that the firm did not care about them.

Last week, Apple's Tim Cook said it was an "invasion of privacy" to traffic in users' personal lives.

 

And when asked what he would do if he were Mr Zuckerberg, Mr Cook replied: "I wouldn't be in that situation."

 

Facebook has faced intense criticism after it emerged that it had known for years that Cambridge Analytica had harvested data from about 50 million of its users, but had relied on the political consultancy to self-certify that it had deleted the information.

Tim Cook is dead right for sure - and I'm glad Apple isn't heading in the same way as FaceBook, Twitter and Google etc. Like Apple or not, they have the best privacy policy around now.

In my view, Zuckerberg is still a very young and naive CEO and doesn't understand this world as much as Cook - he could learn a lot. Such as sniffing into peoples messages and personal data - and selling them off is not a good idea. Moreso lying about it .

Tim Cook's statement is pretty spot-on, especially as these online services can only grow. There is still a strong future for these services but only if people arent put off.

I think the investors feel this will blow over. The krill are addicted to FB. Logging in is habitual. The masses won't leave... And FB does care about non paying consumers, because the whales have to eat something...

Look I can see what Cook is saying but people that put their personal shit online, should only blame themselves.  Everyone that uses facebook is an adult or close to it.  Use it responsibly and to what the user feels its OK to share. 

 

Its stupid to put things online that people don't want others to use that info. 

 

Lets take this a step further.  All those people that have this incessant need to share on Facebook, why? Are they so alone they must share with the world what they are up to, or their view points on things that probably don't even affect them in a day to day life?

 

Social media is not the next great thing in life.  If anything it can create more harm than good because of the mass of people that really don't know much.  Ya know we need a working class but that's like 90% of the population and if they are all sharing and like minds gather, its not that great of thing.......  So in summation if these masses of people want to give out info about themselves and what they are doing, go for it!  Because they probably don't even care or can't even think about the ramification of doing such things in the long run.

Remember: Facebook tracks what people do on other websites for targeted advertising. Doesn't matter whether or not people put anything personal on FB, because if they've used it at all FB will have started collecting data.
I and my family have known for years about FB's shitty practice because of looking up something in Google for example and then seeing an advertisement for the exact same thing in FB.  I also saw the same thing using my prepaid visa at vending machines-a prepaid Visa that had had only been used online with Paypal-as I'd see adverts for the specific drinks that I'd been buying that week (mainly coffee).

Anything done online today, there is no such thing as anonymous.  Back when there was no such thing as the internet, you don't think stores didn't track what you buy?  Data mining is part of the internet.  Now what Facebook is doing is taking it a step further.  I barely use Facebook for anything.  Its a waste of time lol.  I don't even understand how people can spend more than 10 minutes a day on it!  Does it give a person anything meaningful?

It's funny tim cook saying he wouldn't be in that situation,  that is moot.  He would be in exactly that position if Steven jobs hadn't made apple what it is.   He's literally been flying of the back other peoples work while zukerberg has built his billions from a service that people don't even pay for.    As much as I despise FB I find Tim cooks rhetoric to be a cheap grab and maybe even a bit jealous that Zuk's self built worth is $62Bn while Tim is only worth $400M.   

 

And before anyone says it, giving up personal information is not the same as handing over cash.

And?  he's worth 155 times more than cook, half cooks age and runs a company that makes money out of people being people.  There's a lot to be jealous over.

He's been peddling overpriced goods for a little too long to have much relevance to the idea of a social service that doesn't happen to cost anything to individual users. Apple used to be about being different, and soon enough, people will be a bit more blase towards them and we'll have to see how they can overcome that.

Sure there is. But one of those things is not being behind a brand that people like and that has physical product.

Tim does have a BSc and an MBA so he is 200% cooler than Zuckerberg.

What I mean his Tim is much more educated and so his opinion means a lot more. BSc is just cool factor though.

I still find it funny that people aren't mad at Google or other companies yet. Google can own your DNS, browser, search engine, email, phone, cloud backup, router, watch, and the list goes on and on.

not really. I heavely dislike Google. But they are now so present it is hard to not depend on them. Want a phone? don't want apple? oh, sorry, you gotta use google. But you need a gmail too for android. Oh and this. And that. i try to limit my use of google as much as possible, but it's difficult.

 

though yeh, people angry at facebook for having your phone calls and whatnot without realizing that, for good or bad, google easily knows and has x20 more info on you (like the gps thing from last year...)

I hate Google, for lots of reasons, but mostly because they are the same as FB in that regard.

It means Tim knows the difference between a good decision and a bad one - and certainly more qualified for the job. If it weren't for FaceBook, Zuckerberg could well be working at McDonalds. Tim has worked hard for his wealth and that means a lot more.

The difference is Tim has tertiary qualifications, while Zuck does not. Tim already was working prior to Apple and had appropriate work experience.
