Intel Mobile CPUs on LGA1150 socket?

Herman Mcpootis

Today, i'm gonna show you guys something that you may have never seen before...

... Okay fine, maybe some of you have seen it already(why didn't i make this thread sooner ). Saw this on taobao months ago but only picked up a 4870HQ after my 2670 v2+X79 combo started crapping out on me. So apparently, some guys in China have managed to adapt some BGA 1364 CPUS to fit the LGA 1150 socket, namely some Haswell and Crystal Well CPUs have been adapted. Prices start at ¥458 for a low-end i5 4200H(basically an i3) to ¥1159 for an i7 4980HQ.

The CPU and what's included:

Comes with some thermal paste(HY880), a Torx screwdriver for the screw, the CPU(duh...) and a metal nut if the motherboard can't install the CPU as-is.

Some Evidence:

Note that as the CPU is 0.8mm taller than a normal LGA1150 CPU, you may need to use the metal nut that is included to raise the screw holding the Hold-Down plate to allow some motherboards to properly install the CPU. All Gigabyte motherboards WILL NOT ACCEPT CPUS with an Crystal Well CPUs so avoid those, all other motherboards should work just fine(don't quote me on that...:P). There's also no golden triangle on the CPU so double check if you installed it properly(it really only goes in one way due to the notches but eh :P).

Now this is amazing. I want one now :P

the most expensive i7 they have is $184 USD, shipping's around $10 USD or so to Eageland and Canada. not the most expensive for a haswell i7 :P

Picking up a 4760HQ Qualification Sample for my HTPC soon. Hopefully it will work on the Supox IB85MY-Q7 I bought from taobao a while ago.

Also @TheRandomness: I don't think this is a particularly special mod. Socket adapters like this have been done before for CPUs that have the same architecture but a different socket (478 to 775 adapter, for example).

Do you have to do microcode injection to bios with pre-existing MSI z97 mobo?

haven't seen it for other generations, closest thing was a standard jetway motherboard with socket G2 for mobile CPUs.
