Sex Workers Say Porn on Google Drive Is Suddenly Disappearing

Quote

Sex workers are reporting that their Google Drive files are mysteriously locked or vanishing.

Quote

Porn performer Avey Moon was trying to send the lucky winner of her Chaturbate contest his prize—one of her videos, titled "POV Blowjob"—through her Google Drive account. But it wouldn’t send, and Google wasn’t telling her why.
She’s not alone. Six porn performers I talked to and more on social media said that they suddenly can't download adult content they keep on Google Drive. They also said they can't a share that content with other accounts or send to clients. In some cases, the adult content is disappearing from Drive without warning or explanation. The porn performers I talked to started sounding the alarm on Twitter last week. They said that Google Drive no longer seemed sex-trade friendly, detailing error messages and sharing cloud storage alternatives with each other.

When I asked about sexual content being blocked on Drive, a spokesperson for Google directed me to the Drive policy page—specifically the section on sexually explicit material, which says, “Do not publish sexually explicit or pornographic images or videos.... Additionally, we do not allow content that drives traffic to commercial pornography.” Writing about porn and sex is permitted, the policy states, as long as it’s not accompanied by sexually explicit images or videos. According to Google, Drive uses a combination of automated systems and manual review to decide what’s in violation.

Some people have been using GDrive to store porn for years without an issue even though GDrive TOS haven't changed. Google's sudden enforcing of their policies might have something to do with the impending vote on the SESTA-FOSTA bill.

I don't like this, but unlike SFW video sharing where Google holds a monopoly with YT, there's a ton of places where you can store files and upload porn.

videos being deleted from the cloud is why I don't trust the cloud storage and will always chose local storage first.

edit: to be clear when I say videos I'm not even talking about pron, who actually keeps that around and doesn't go find a new video online each time?

So many jokes. Just, so many jokes.

More interesting technical discussion is if Google is now able to process video to check for content, in real-ish time, or if it's keyword search. If it's the first, that points to some pretty big tech being rolled out.

And they are using that big tech for porn first xD

Just an observation, why do people censor their posts containing the word "porn" and changing it to "pron"? It's not like mods will give you a warning point for posting the word "porn".

Microsoft did something similar years ago with their OneDrive (formerly SkyDrive). [here][here]. In fact, you can't upload executable files to OneDrive.

Historically, because the word was somewhat taboo or just a topic you don't talk about openly. "pr0n" comes from l33t speak.

Well it's not like there are five year olds in this forum. It makes me think that some people in this forum are way too squeamish.

I wouldn't say that. If you regularly talk in a lot of different venues that have various standards, you'll normally "speak" in a default manner attuned to the general nature of the average location. In other words, for a lot of guys that work in tech, they'll default to "pr0n" because they work in an environment that it is best to avoid that type of discussion.

To be fair, the thing you sign before using ANY and ALL cloud services (not only google, also dropbox, apple, ect.) clearly states "NO PORN!".

Most likely due to being a world wide service and many countries having laws against owning porn.

So yeah, they got what they signed up for. On the other hand: WHY?! WHY?! NOT MY F***** PORN! *cough*.

Not the first time i have heard of those files vanishing, but usually the users get a mail first to give them a chance to remove it themselves.

Of course your privacy is of utmost importance, here let me RUMMAGE THROUGH YOUR DOCUMENTS

Thank you for using Google Drive

So, you would prefer to have it like this:

"Of course your privacy is of utmost importance, please feel free to store any sensitive data like porn (of any kind), weapon deals, terrorist data / communication and whatever you please here and rest assured you won't be called by the police in case of a few towers falling over due to the stuff you placed on our servers. Also rest assured, that we won't go to jail for allowing that either!"

I know this may sound extreme, but please stay real. They can't just allow everything on THEIR servers. The excuse of "We did not know it was there!" did not hold up in courts for the past few hundred years, it won't hold up now. Yeah, it is a privacy invasion. I don't claim otherwise. But if you want 100% privacy, why the hell would you store data on OTHER PEOPLES servers. Also, why would you even START to expect other people to hide your (illegal) stuff for you?

Again, i realize this is a privacy concern on the one side. But on the other side it is also a law concern for them AND a security concern for the rest of the world. Because, you know... even if i went a little crazy with the tower example, it is not that far off. Any and every communication that is easy and really private WILL be used by the bad guys.

Simple. Just don't enforce the okay parts. You could ban all porn in your ToS but only remove illegal porn (piracy, children etc). That's what they've done so far. Why crack down on it now? I'm sure it's about money. There is a slight chance it's Google's sjw policies leaking though.

They have algorithms to deal with most illegal content anyway. This isn't new.

So, you would be fine for them to judge what is considered "ok porn" and "illegal porn" ?

And as long as they still scan your data, but only remove the bad stuff, it is fine as well?

That is like saying "if i don't see it, it is not there!".

Also what is considered ok and not ok LARGLY differs depending on country and for some even states. I doubt they want to risk missing a single law change in either of the hundreds of countries and go to court over that. Much easier to just say "hey, follow the rules and all is fine".

Exactly, once you put stuff on their servers it's up to them what is appropriate, not sure why people expect their data to be private on a server that isn't theirs especially on Google servers. Google doesn't want to be liable for any illegal crap people put up there so it makes sense to remove the porn rather than "rummaging" through it anyway to make sure people aren't putting illegal or terrorist data on it. If you want to store porn buy your own NAS and put it on your personal network ffs.

Illegal porn is covered by criminal law so I'm not sure what you're getting at. Right now they're already deciding what's right and wrong so what difference does it make?

They're already scanning your stuff so what difference does it make?

Google employs a huge legal team and already has to abide by the laws of every jurisdiction they operate in so what difference does it make?

Quite frankly you make no sense. I'm merely questioning why they enforce rules they haven't enforced for a decade. Something's changed and probably not for the better.

The "think of the children" or "because terrorists" angle doesn't really apply here. So please refrain. It's embarrassing enough that Google cracking down on porn brings up "bad guys" as an argument. The porn they supposedly banned was legal but against their broad ToS that they haven't enforced earlier.

Thing is … Google might get into legal trouble if their servers were hosting porn without proper age verifications. This could (!) get them in trouble in some places. That's why they've prohibited it in the first place.

But tbh … just zip it and put a password on it. Even if Google had a a tool to scan the content, I doubt they have the capacities to crack down on every single encrypted file. Still probably against their terms though.
