Why shutdown if I can hibernate?

WolfLoverPro

I normally go for dinner and put my pc into sleep to well save time

but what happens if I put my pc into sleep when a game is running? Will it mess it up like crash and not save or?

other thing is what’s the point in shutdown if u can hibernate

Depends on the game I suppose.

I usually just shutdown when i'm done playing since it clears the memory and it's usually good to reboot your computer once in a while.  It's amazing how many issues I've fixed with a simple reboot (I work on a helpdesk).

well it will be saved into your ram or boot drive if your out of that, and if you didn't save before and it didn't auto save it should be fine ( long as not multiplayer )

well shutdown means your not draining power so if your going somewhere for the weekend and you shut it down then it will not drain battery anymore, the only slightly annoying thing is the 2 mins from boot up log in and then opening up X thing I want to use.

Shutting down gives your computer a clean slate to work with (usually). Hibernate retains all the state information, so if things are screwing up, things will still be screwed up.

And unless the game requires an internet connection, suspending the computer usually doesn't harm it.

When shutting down, you don't run the risk of having everything lost in an unsafe shutdown if you lose power while sleeping. Hibernation also doesn't have this risk, but if you're like me and change components a lot, Windows doesn't like it when you change hardware while it's hibernated.

If you have a SSD, some managing software like Samsung Magician will disable hibernation as hibernating creates a rather large hibernation file on the drive which wastes your limited read and write cycles. You're essentially wearing down your SSD for nothing as booting from cold to the login screen/desktop on a SSD should take around 10 seconds. Hibernating wouldn't be much faster.

Usually during the day if I haven't turned my pc on yet. I just lock it (win key + L).

When I go to bed, I generally shut it off.

Does sleep mode also wreck a ssd

Nope, as it'll store your computer state in memory (RAM). Which is why it can often bring back to lockscreen in a second or two.

yeah depends on the game, I use sleep mode while playing fallout 4 when I'm far from a save location and it's late and I can keep playing it the next day and save

Hibernation allows the PC to shutdown but also allow Windows to retain its last state before the shutdown by saving it to the hibernation file present on the respective drive. Sometimes Windows can get kinda funny after not restarting after a while, and shutting down explicitly allows one to avoid that potential issue.

Whoa, don't think that way! Hibernation is a better alternative for your bear than shutting him down.
