Going to build a NAS with unraid

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/KbTm4C

Anything I should change or recommend? I have an extra SSD for caching purposes. I want this NAS to function as a plex server as well as a personalized redundant storage solution using 1 parity drive.

Do add-on SATA adapter cards work for adding more drives in the future? Are they compatible with unraid?

Add-on sata adapter cards do work as far as i know.

On the drives - Seagate doesn't seem to be the most reliable brand in drives right now: https://www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-failure-rates-q3-2017/

Maybe go for dual channel ram instead of one DIMM (tho speed shouldn't really be that affected in a NAS) and ECC would be supported by the CPU.

Is ECC support required by the motherboard as well?

I will look around regarding hard drive choices.

Yup, and your choice does not support it. Might not be worth it for you - but at least something to keep in mind in a server. :)

Do you need plex transcoding, if you do id get a faster cpu.

a dual-core with 3.3GHz is not fast enough? Do you have any recommendations?

I would like to have  transcoding. My goal is just one stream at a time. Most of my files are MKV and AVI.

What codec, avi and mkv are containers, not codecs.

That cpu should be fine for a single stream.

VLC is a codec, am I correct?

vlc is a player.

A codec is mpeg2, h256, cineform, or others

A container holds a codec and some more info about the video, like MOV, MTS, mp4, MKV, AVI and others.
