They were free - to my dad.

He often took home old computer parts from work.

Question - what exact GPUs did you find?

i have no idea mate. we have a bin in a cupboard with an asortment of antient fanless (somtimes a tiny super loud mini fan) graphics cards. ill go to work tomorrow and have a look exactly what we got. i wont be able to test them all to find out what they are but i can take some pictures. we are a charity and we take donations of old pc's to fix up and donate to people who cant afford a pc, so we get all sorts of stuff come in.

They're all worth about $20 on eBay still, but most of them are so old that if you're using Windows on these PC's the drivers are no longer getting updates. Less of a problem if you're using Linux.

Lack of up-to-date drivers still won't stop me from buying a Radeon HD5650 in decent condition. The mobile version in my old laptop was easily pushed to near desktop clocks, and it ended up being a pretty capable card (especially with a Phenom II N970 upgrade - P920 sucked).

Problem is, it can't boot anything. Just pulls up the Apple logo, then the circle with line through it.

And this is a 1999 Mac.

Thankfully I have burned copies of OS 9, OS X 10.0, OS X 10.1.3, and OS X 10.4.6.

So I should be able to get it working :)

*After I replace its CMOS battery.

Security holes and getting locked out of Windows updates or a greater chance of problems with updates are what comes with end of driver support. None of those are fun. With open source community drivers it doesn't matter as much on Linux, but for Windows it can be some problems.

I learned about them today via Technology Connections.
