Okay, not retro, but still. So today I bought the 2.5ghz Powermac G5 quad for, wait for it..... 8 bucks. YEAHHHHH

To be clear, IIRC it's the most powerful Powermac you can get. It's also WATER COOLED. :D

All I've done so far is power test it, and everything's looking up so far, I got the chime.

And damn, I just have to say, what a beautiful and masterfully crafted machine. The design was way ahead of it's time.

Wow @2Buck That’s amazing! Mine cost me $40 and it’s not even water cooled! It’s amazing that the pump still works after all these years.

Do you plan to keep it in working condition or are you gonna Case mod it to fit mATX/ATX components like I did?

This case design sign is still so freaking modern I don’t think it would be out of Apples Design language to release it again today. That design is what Pros want in a Mac today. Full component access with sockets, not solder!

HOLY CRAP!!! Awesome! Specs?

Also can you remove the cover so we all can see the water cooler?

Haven't dived in deep yet, but so far these are what the specs appear to be:

4GB (8 512mb DIMMs)

2.5ghz Quad core (two dual core PowerPC 970MPs)

Unsure what the GPU is, and there's no HDD.

It's also a PCIe model, it has three PCIe slots.

When I play with it some more I'll be sure to snap some more photos and provide more info. :D

Will definitely keep it original. It's the best of it's kind, the best Power Mac model to exist, so it'd be a shame to gut it. As of right now I'm getting chime but no video, so I'll troubleshoot it this weekend and hopefully get this legendary beast up and running.

And yeah, even as a "PC fanboy", I could fanboy about this computer's design for hours. It's just so awesome! And like you said, it's perfectly modern. It'd be nice to see Apple return to this design. Great airflow, lots of upgrade options, etc. But yeah I just love this case. Apple was worrying about making the inside of a computer pretty when no one else was, and the build quality is just mouth watering. The case is so awesome that I am tempted to gut it and build a Hackintosh in it, but I'll wait for another lower spec'd G5 to come around to do that because like I said, this thing is a legend and I wanna leave that way.

On second thought, when I eventually getting around to building a Ryzen machine, I'd love to build it in a modded G5 case. That'd be slick as hell. Most PC cases out right now just don't do anything for me.

I don't think there's a way to take the heatsink off. Just a small metal heatspreader.

specs as she now stands:

Core 2 DUO E6600

4GB DDR2

Radeon 3870

Asrock 1394a

planned upgrades:

Core 2 Quad of some kind, or a modded Xeon.

maybe a R9 290? those are pretty cheap nowadays.

up the RAM to 8GB.

should be enough to play some older games still! i will also get a better cooler so we can OC it as far as it goes.

Hi. So I found a 17 year old graphics card in my father's old stuff. It's got some glue on it so I don't really know if it'll work or not but it's with the original packaging and manual and CD and stuff. Anybody know how much it would sell for at an auction?

Zilch, the thing is ancient POS. Nobody in their right mind would pay a penny for a GF 2 MX with the cabled VGA ripped out of its place and then hot glued back.. not only you're likely to not get screen output from it, but it also puts a vintage rig into danger given its condition (how the AGP port looks, etc).

Recycle it.

it has a nice box, however the card itself isn't in a good condition, also its old but not that old so probably not worth much.

Though it looks like that, the VGA cable hasn't been ripped out. There's just some glue stuck to it. Anyhow thanks for your opinion.

Certainly into old territory, but I finally softmodded my Xbox and threw in an 80GB 7200.7 which is barely enough for now as you can tell by the F partition (defo gonna need an upgrade). All it needs now is the clock cap removed since mine leaked and I just band-aided it (well and a component cable because composite looks like ass). Probably wouldn't hurt to find an adequate 80-wire cable even though for what it has in it, crosstalk really isn't a problem.

Also press F to pay respects to the young WD2500BB that was in it before the very well-used Seagate drive, it seems to disagree with the Xbox or it's dying. :/
