Only real concern would be the power delivery with super-long-term load, but since its job is a Plex server it barely hits the CPU hard so it's not a problem.

If the case has sufficient exhaust, it should be fine. 

 

Always made me wonder why so many pre-builts don't have any active chassis cooling (no case fans) at all. Even on lower-end hardware, it still helps with long-term reliability.

Proper airflow in the DT is a bit of a party trick to keep dust out, since the only intake is the 80mm intake, whereas the normal exhaust is the 80mm PSU fan. Chassis temps so far seem to be fine, though god forbid you dump heavy load on both the CPU and GPU and touch the side panel, 'cuz the grille where I have the CPU fan exhausting hits upwards of 60C.

Lol, reminds me of when I used to run an overclocked, open air cooled R9 290 in a Node 304 and then played demanding games for a couple hours. Gives new meaning to the term 'hot box'.

You haven't REALLY understood hotbox until you run an overclocked Q6600 and a 7950 in a case where the only case fans are the PSU and a 92mm temperature-controlled fan both acting as exhaust.

Pentium 4 HT, even with 2 delta 80mm exhaust fans, those got really toasty. I've had it reach 70 degrees when playing Maplestory back in the day... which is not quite a demanding game. The board I used had a temperature monitor which would sound a constant alarm if it crossed the threshold of 70 degrees.

Eh, neither of my HT chips really get that hot (2.4GHz Northwood and a 2.8GHz Prescott). Hell, I have the Northwood in my OptiPlex 170L DT, and the redonk full-copper heatpiped cooler with an 80mm blower (one of those fancy Dell ones with built in thermal controls) on it runs hella frosty (full load in 22C ambients results in exhaust temps in like the high 30s).

 

I'd love to figure out what the fastest low-profile PCI non-express graphics card is so I could find one and throw it in.

That looks like an Acer Aspire series system. Probably a Pentium D in there. I recognize that case along with the cable management hooks Have one right next to me

I was using an AOpen board at the time with the stock cooler. After the Northbridge heatsink failed and the chip fried, I replaced the board with a second hand ASRock and it still had overheating issues. I wonder if it was just my chip or if the stock heatsink was just terrible. It was a 3.0Ghz Prescott on 478.

I've never really had issues with any of my P4's running hot (fastest one on 478 was the 2.8 Prescott HT, and it peaked in the low-70s on a stock cooler with a dying fan, fastest 775 was a 3.2HT). Maybe I just have good luck.

I never had problems with my P4 630 (also Preshott) overheating as well-and it's cooler was worse than stock (solid aluminium block cooler that was also thinner). I even had it overclocked to 3.8GHz without overheating on my Asus P5K VM (the board it came with). And it still won't overheat either-I killed it in a failed delid and had bits fall off my 640J, leaving me with the "low" TDP P4 631 as a last resort LGA775 CPU (its got 5 Core 2 spares ahead of it)

Linux continues to impress and surprise me. Just refurbished this old Thinkcentre, core 2 duo, 2GB ram, 80GB HDD, etc, nothing special. Threw Linux Mint Mate 18.3 on it and it ran decent. Totally useable for browsing and other basic stuff. 

 

Then I got curious and slapped in the GeForce 6200 I found in one of those other dead 775 machines I posted the other day. I changed nothing in the OS. Just simply installed the card, put the monitor to the DVI on the card and booted it up. To my surprise, it loaded into the OS without skipping a beat and when I opened the driver menu, not only had it already automatically detected the card and found the best Nvidia proprietary drivers for it, but also added it to the options in the drivers menu. All I had to do was check the box, click apply and reboot. That's it. And it worked. So simple.

 

With Windows, I would have had to search for the last available driver for that card, which for windows 8 or 10 would not exist, Windows 7, probably, then download and install. 

 

Linux really deserves a much larger userbase. The more I use it, the more I find it's easier and faster to use than WIndows in a lot of ways. 

 

Anyways, that's not really what this thread is about, so here's the ol'girl with the GeForce 6200 installed on the cool little riser card: 

 

 

 

 

It's now actually capable of streaming YouTube at 720p full screen, where as it could only handle 480p before, lol.

heheheheheh my OptiPlex 170L can do it on Xubuntu with a 2.4GHz P4 Northwood HT with the incredible Intel EXTREEM GRAPHECS TOO (albeit with a few dropped frames).

Yeah, they really thought about the design of the chassis. Airflow is quite good and it runs surprisingly quiet with two little 60 or 80mm intake fans. 

 

I'm actually tempted to do a sleeper build in this case...
